  • The candlesticks add height to the mantel (because it's a gigantic one).

Adding A Pop Of Colour To The Mantel

Now that spring is here, I felt like the mantel needed a splash of colour. I decided on blue and went on a Decor Mission. I came back pretty happy with myself. One of my biggest successes ...»
was the use of a gazing ball on the mantel - it's typically outdoor art, but looks fabulous inside (especially in springtime).

What do you think?

Painting Knotty Pine Panelling

Update those dark paneled wood walls by simple adding some coats of paint. Our family room was refreshed and updated by using a warm white, Benjamin Moore Marscapone. See more at http://www.no29design.com/2012/01/how-i-pain...

  • Painting the walls was step one. 1
  • Bye bye pee yellow and nearly the right color, hello proper color.
  • There we go!

  • Now, the green can be fixed, with a little bit of white!
  • looking better already!
  • Doors are next on the list.
  • Then Drawers!
  • So much closer!
  • Frames are the easy part!
  • Ahhh, so much better!
  • We opted to paint the trim around the windows to match the wall for two reasons: There just wasn't enough space between it and the cabinets to have it be white, and the trim around the two windows was different on each (new vs old).

From green to a dream- our kitchen cabinets get painted!

We needed to get rid of the green wood cabinets, so bad!

Living room

This is my country-coastal style living room that we renovated last year. Since this is our first home we really are on a shoestring budget and all our renovations are DIY. This room was ...»
one of the biggest selling points for us when we first viewed the house as it's bay window and vertically joined claddling lends itself perfectly to our country coastal style of decorating.

Our crisp, white slipcovered couch is one of the few new items of furniture in the room with the rest being thrifted and upcycled, usually with a coat of beachy white paint. I also love to decorate with stone and white, soft blues and aquas, stripes, polka dots and a whole lot of white.

As you can see the living room was extremely brown when we moved in. Firstly we painted the walls in Dulux Fair Bianca half strength, changed out the curtains, pulled up the carpet and retiled the floor.

  • Before - a big cluttered mess with tan colored walls and cheap wall paper border. Absolutely no organization in here whatsoever and this room served as a basic "catch all" room for all our junk!
  • After - Soft blue/gray color on the walls, beadboard and trim, new floor, and black accessories and baskets to help with organization. Much better!!
  • A closer view of some of the accessories we used in this room. The hanging bar you see here will soon be replaced with a white one.
  • I purchased this plain jar at Wal Mart, spray painted the lid black, embellished it with some scrapbook stickers, and tied a black and white gingham bow on it to spruce it up a bit. A nicer alternative to those ugly wash powder boxes.

Thank you for your comment, Dee. Actually, I had been planning the laundry room redo for a ...»
while, but life kept getting in the way! And I had a difficult time deciding on what color to put on the walls. I originally had decided on a sage green color (as you can see in the before pic) but after slapping a sample of it on the wall and living with it for a few weeks, I just didn't want to go in that direction. So it took me some time to make a final decision, but once I did, I was ready to just get it all done! :)
