Gardening: How does one make money via gardening?

I have a 10k square foot lot.. I have tilled and (almost) prepared 1/3 of it for a vegetable garden for my family.. But I still have 2/3 of this lot and got the idea to start seeing if I ...»
could make money growing anything in it. I am not having very much luck Googling anything, and so I thought I would ask here if anyone has experience in gardening-for-profit?

Where I live most of us set the veggies/fruit on a table near the road with bags and a can for ...»
money. Yes it is on the honor system but it seems to work well here and I have done it with flowers from my gardens after dividing them too.. Also if you have an acre of property or more you get a tax break if you sell veggies or fruit you have raised----another benefit!

Birdbath Sedum Fared Well Thru the Winter! ;-)

Last year, I turned a birdbath into a flower planter and filled it with 3 types of sedum. I wasn't sure how it would fare, thru summer or winter. But, during the summer it flourished, and ...»
it fared well over the winter as well. I let the leaves and pinestraw that fell, stay and be a mulch/cover for it during the cold months. And this spring, its quite beautiful, even though one particular type has overtaken the others for now lol. (although the one that grows like a vine I had to trim back b/c it looked quite rough after the winter, even tho it was still living)...there are even pieces that fell to the ground and are growning! :)

Thanks for the update, Angela. I wondered how they would do being raised off the ground. I'm ...»
glad you saw good results and may be tempted to give this a try even though we suffer through more "winter."

Plumbing Material Succulent Garden

Sometimes when roaming through the hardware store aisles, I get strange looks. Because I end up buying a whole group of galvanized plumbing caps - as planters for a succulent garden.

What a clever and attractive idea! Succulents are so hardy, they are one of my favorite plants.

neaten up the plant. Autumn is usually the best time to divide and it only needs done every 3-4 years.

  • Tight for two-but possible!
  • Stackable hangers keep 3-4 items in the space of one
  • Extra shelving comes in handy for extra clothes, purses, jewelry bags and other essentials

Make the most out of a small closet

Our bedroom closet measures 3x2x10 and for years we have struggled to make our clothes fit. We recently added 2 shelves with room for one more, plus I discovered Space Bags and these ...»
nifty stackable hangers. Both are great space savers. In addition, since we also share a dresser, I purchased a cloth closet and some baskets at the $$store to use for all my personals. I can't stand anything on my floors so if you are wondering where I keep my shoe collection it is in another closet hanging on a shoe tree.

How have you solved your space issues?

I don't remember a brand name on it, but I did pick them both up at Family Dollar so it was ...»
only like $4 and came in black. The one in my laundry room was a bit more at $7 and only came in blue. My Family Dollar still sells them so hopefully you will find one or more, too.

  • The hole is just large enough.

Another Thrifty Tip!

In my quest for better health and pinching pennies, I purchased one of the automatic soap dispensers before looking into the price of refills. My clever DH found a solution: After the ...»
soap was gone, he drilled a hole in the top of the soap container so it can be easily refilled. I recommend using generic since I found the name brand soaps would thicken up and clog the dispenser.

Upcycled Pallet Garden Shelves

These shelves are made from one pallet and go on either side of my back door. They hold my gardening supplies as well as anything else I need and were for (best of all) free.

Another wonderful idea for re-using pallets--love the rustic look and country feel to them.

  • I love yard art. I discovered hypertufa several years ago and have been creating my own pots and columns ever since. I visit antique shops and junk shops often for items I can turn into more yard art. 1
  • After hacking my way through the jungle, I created paths and started putting in shade plants. Since I have an abundance of deer who also call my woods home, I've lost a small fortune to their voracious appetites. 2
  • This is a small water garden I built in a space not suitable for anything else.
  • This small bridge is the entrance of my woodland garden. There was a constant wash out in this area so I created a dry creek bed to channel the run off where I needed it to go.
  • This is a before picture of an area between my garden shed and carport. I tried roses here but the drainage is bad and it didn't get enough sun.
  • This is an after picture of the same area with small water garden and foot path. I found the tiny child's bench at an antique store in pieces. I planted Carolina Jasmine on trellises between the pillars of the carport. 1
  • Another view of woodland garden.
  • Dry creek bed. I followed the natural flow of the water when it rained. It took me most of the summer using a rotor tiller, wheel barrow, pic and shovel. It was hard work but serves it's purpose.
  • Path through woodland garden.
  • Fairy garden. I'm blessed with an abundance of rocks and moss on my property so can create all my hardscapes with what I find in the woods. 1

My Garden

After building our house 6 years ago we had a blank slate to start landscaping. I had several challenges ahead of me, one being no budget for a landscaper, poor clay soil and a back woods ...»
inundated with poison ivy and briars, basically an impenetrable jungle, a slope with washouts and gullies. Tackling one job at a time and finishing it before moving onto the next kept me focused. It's ever evolving but it's come along way from being a muddy mess to my little piece of heaven on earth. Hope you enjoy.
