About Me:

My name's Stephanie and I'm a first time homeowner in New England DIY-ing my way through LGH with the help of my main man Matt and our 4 roommates (Dutch the Dog & Luigi, Zsa Zsa, and Henry the cats). I hop all over the house painting here and reupholstering there and adjusting this, I just can't seem to stay in one place for long. My only rule: it's gotta be CHEAP.

Favorite area of home improvement:

DIY, repurposing

mother's day project.

Just put some rocks at the bottle for drainage, then add cactus soil, then separate and arrange your suculents and fill in the empty spots with more soil. Water lightly. Super easy!

These were all gifts, but for the one I kept I didn't even paint it, I liked the look of the clear glass with the rocks and soil showing.

rocks because the succulents don't have big roots, and using cactus soil over regular potting soil makes a difference as well. I haven't had any problem with them!

DIY Tufted Headboard

I've been wanting an upholstered headboard ever since we got rid of our creaky wrought iron canopy bed like, 8 years ago, but the ones I really wanted were uber-expensive. I kept thinking ...»
that someday I'd make a headboard that looked like one of those expensive headboards that I daydreamed about. Well that someday has come! If you read my headboard round-up post from a few weeks ago, you'll notice that the ones I really liked were in the $1,000-2,000 range. This one cost $99 to make. 99 bucks! • I got the chevron-striped scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby.
  • I used a glue stick to adhere the scrapbook paper to the bottoms of the compartments and the bottom of the drawer itself.

I organized and "prettified" my office desk drawer

Using chevron-striped scrapbook paper and a set of organizers I found collecting dust in a closet, I created a pretty and organized blogging desk drawer.

Painting: name of a warm white paint?

I have been thinking of painting the interior of my home white...not a stark white but a warm white. I also need a matching trim color. Do you know the name and brand of paint that would be a good all over choice?

  • I started with a foam mannequin head, Magikote Foam Primer and Stone Metallic Spray Paint by Krylon. I named my head Betty.
  • Betty got two thin coats of primer. The primer seals the foam and creates a smooth surface to paint on.
  • I set Betty on top of an empty wine bottle filled with pebbles for drying.
  • Betty also got several coats of Metallic Stone paint. It was easy to paint her while she was sitting on the bottle. I liked her on the bottle so much I decided to keep her there.
  • When she was dry, I used a compass to draw a 6" circle on the top of her head. I hollowed out the planting cavity with a kitchen knife and made a hole for drainage. Then I planted her with a trailing succulent I found at Home Depot.
  • I added Betty's "Bling" with some old necklaces, glasses and even some rhinestone earrings (they were easy to stick into the side of her head). Betty was born! She sits on top of the buffet in my dining room. Thanks for reading! 3
