About Me:

I grew up gardening with my grandfather in our backyard acre vegetable garden. I learned everything I could from him and enjoyed every minute of it. He started my love of gardening and it grew from there. I then went to work at a nursery where I learned alot about perennials, shrubs, trees, and their growth habits and how to care for them. I have taught myself over time about house plants, I love to experiment with plants, and growing things, taking cuttings, planting seeds, and just seeing what I can do with them. There is nothing more amazing to me, than to watch a plant grow from a seed, or from a small cutting, or small plant, into something beautiful! I love blooming plants, and to see them attract the bees and butterflies in nature. I am amazed at what God gave us to enjoy and I love to nuture it!

Garden Diva Chick

I've had this wire dress form for a long time and have been wanting to do something with it. Paid a visit to Wingard's Nursery because they had a potting area with very helpful staff. Had a good day being creative with her.

Fun, beautiful and safe for kids...think pondless waterfall and stream

This family has 3 very young children. They wanted a pool but did not feel comfortable with the safety of a pool with their young children. They decided on a fun, beautiful safe pondless ...»
waterfall and stream. The word "pondless" means that the reservoir for the water is underground where it is safe. The 4' high by 8' wide waterfall spills into a large landing area, and then travels down a narrow stream, around side of a lounging patio, and disappears behind evergreens into our pondless reservoir. This water feature gets winterized in December and starts up again in March. Every spring we come in to spruce up the plantings, adding perennials, annuals and mulch. www.deckandpatio.com

porch chandelier

was wanting something very different for on the porch....as it is just a small porch. My taste runs off the wall and crazy. The baby food jars are just the right size for tealite candles...and the bike rim just looked like it needed something to do :)

  • I finally decided on a home for them, for today at least. These guys can be moved since there is no dirt.
  • I grouped them on my dining table with a battery operated string of pearl and bead lights that are on a timer for the evening.
  • Here is a close up of the pearl, bead and light garland. I can't wait to see this tonight!

Falling in Love with Tillandsia

Good morning everyone,

This weekend I innocently went to the Street Fair that was in town for the weekend. ...»

Little did I know I would be starstruck with tillandsia, also known as air plants. Yes, I have seen them many times before but never gave them a thought. This little booth had them on display so beautifully and they were in bloom. I bought 4, went home and researched for hours, and realized this would become another passion for me. The next day I went back to the Street Fair and got more. Here they are sitting in glass out for their morning light while it is still cool in the mornings. I am still working on ideas for how to display them in the house. It may look like a bunch of salad, but look closer and see why I am so smitten! :)

  • Step # 1 ~ drill small holes on the bottom and sides and large holes on the top of a plastic storage tub
  • Here's a shot of the holes in the worm bin so you can see what I mean!
  • Step # 2 ~ crumple newspaper, then wet it, wring it out and fill the bottom of the tub this way
  • Step # 3 ~ add a few handfuls of peat moss or garden soil and toss gently, the add the worms and lightly toss again
  • Step # 4 ~ now add a few kitchen scraps. Keep the moisture at this level by adding a little water or wet plant matter if dry, shredded paper if too wet

DIY Project ~ Vermicomposting in a tub in a few easy steps!

Plant matter is a resource we should be keeping out of the landfills. But what do you do if you don't have the space for a compost pile or you don't want to be constantly running outside ...»
with your kitchen scraps? Vermicomposting is the answer and , even better,a worm bin is efficient when you're continually adding new material, unlike your outdoor compost pile. Composting at home in a worm tub is most suitable for smaller families and apartment dwellers, or can be used in combination with an outside composting method. A well-tended worm bin shouldn't smell, so some people will keep them in a kitchen cupboard if they're short on space or just want it handy for adding their kitchen waste. The garage or basement are also possible locations for your worm bin. (Note: do not add animal waste, bones, fats or meat to your bins or compost piles. That will make it smell and draw unwanted visitors!)

Follow the easy steps below to set up your own worm bin and begin vermicomposting at home. Set the finished lidded bin on a couple bricks on a tray to collect any drips. You will keep plant matter out of the landfill and have the benefits of compost and compost tea for your houseplants, worms for feeding birds and pet reptiles and going fishing, too!

See my blog post at http://ourfairfieldhomeandgarden.com/diy-pro... for more composting information and worm sources.
