  • The corner shelf unit we built
  • This is how awful the bathroom looked BEFORE the update
  • We now have brown rugs to compliment the new paint color.
  • We originally planned to replace those globe-dressing room type lights but they're not so annoying now that we've changed the other stuff.

Inexpensive Update to an 80's Bathroom

We painted the laminate cabinets and countertop, updated the hardware and then we built the corner shelf thing. The final touch was to make frames that we glued onto the huge mirrors. ...»
The (furniture-grade) wood, paint and hardware cost about $250 in all.

Electrical & Lighting: Novice's question on replacing light fixture

We're thinking of replacing this light fixture but have no idea how to go about it. Can we simply pick any one we like at the store? Can we install it or should we hire an electrician? What technical details (wattage, outlets, etc.) do we have to consider before we buy a new light fixture? Please note I'm starting from scratch.

Right now the bulbs face up toward the ceiling. One of the reasons I don't like the fixture is because of that upward lighting -- it's awfully bright. I want ...»

something that still is bright (because this is a dark room) but not as bright as this. I've been thinking of a large pendant lamp with a shade but I wonder if that will be too dim. Any thoughts on basic styles to consider?. Nothing design-y, please.

  • A little over 6 feet tall...mounted to my bedroom wall.
  • I painted a Norwegian design that I stole from the Sinkadoodles line...but I'm half owner so I'm allowed. :-)
I mounted the board to my wall and then covered the screw with a little wooden "button" - it's now the center of the flower.
  • This is a strainer I found at a thrift store...works great for my post earrings. It's hanging by a ribbon (tied like a man's tie) so I can lift it up and easily reach the earrings' backings.
  • More knobs and handles from Habitat for Humanity. Not sure what I'm going to do with the upside-down pull...maybe put a fake flower or two in there?
  • Oops...I haven't painted (and placed) my other "button" that will cover the mounting screw in the middle of the painted flower. That will be the finishing touch.
  • I mounted it just inside our bedroom door.

I made a Jewelry board using old cabinet knobs and handles and such.

I found all of the handles and knobs from Habitat for Humanity and thrift stores. I bought the cedar wood, stained it dark, beat it up with chains and then put a thin coat of white paint ...»
on it for a distressed look. Then I painted the designs at the top and bottom.

How about a deep brown or espresso color? I think that would go nicely with the dark table ...»
and the brown tones would compliment the pitcher and bowl set and go nicely with the green walls and the green stained glass in the hutch. I've done a quick photoshopped version to get an idea of how it might look. Or a two-toned look to match the neat thing on the floor in the corner of your other picture. Just tossing ideas....cobalt would be bold and beautiful too!
