Making a Fairy Home From an Old Stump

Last years projects consumed my life! This year I have felt a little sad, as absolutely nothing seemed needing to be created, just constant upkeep. I adore creating something from nothing, I crave it and need it like oxygen! For some reason, this morning I saw the old tree stumps in our yard that have been used for potted plants and voila, fairy villages began to breathe life into the dark, void I used to call my mind. It's so nice to see color blooming inside my mind again! Yay! I ...»
like to start at the beginning so welcome to my world of 'nothing but an ugly tree stump!'

Finishing the summer project, just in time for Fall

Well I started out weeding some hills around our gazebo...then hubby and I finished off with pergola's, waterfall with ponds and fish, a bridge or 2...a lot of stairs and pathways. Oh yes ...»
and let's NOT forget the firepit! I love the yard and I am in love with the fish!

  • The mess my yard is now, water draining from off the top of the mountan and taking out our drive way and one side of the circular bank 3
  • Coming lower into the yard, where the water from above has raced through. We are about to dig out and put in a small pond that the dry rock bed we will be adding from the top will drain into...then we will build a bridge over that.
  • I've started digging out a path around the gazebo so you can see the roses planted up against it...a LOT more path to dig out! My hands are blistered already, haha!
  • coming around the back of the gazebo I planted phlox and lavendar...there are elephant ears off to one side and whatever that tall grass is called... 1
  • The forsythia growing thicker around the side of the circle that has full sun...spreading like mad! I think I will have to remove other plants by Fall to just allow the forsythia to own the hill...
  • This shot is to show how steep and where the water races downward...
  • I really hope and pray we can find order in this chaos!
  • tiny little hydrangea...how long do these take to grow? 1
  • more mess...as my friend just pointed out I need to just pick one area and focus! I keep floating like a butterfly...to this flower then that one...it's rather exhausting. I must admit that I never felt sorry for a butterfly before...
  • Friends question to me when looking at my yard... "How do you eat an elephant?"......."One bit at a time!" .....yep now my yard has been compared to eating an elephant.....hahahahahaha I LOVE it!
  • more hill...more plants mixed with weeds...more mulch needed I can't quite tell from this tiny picture but I think some of this area is where the dry rock bed will start...
  • some of the plants are just so pretty that I can't bring myself to terrace and watch them die...so we are putting in some cut up railway ties to just sort of help stop the mulch from racing down the hillside!
  • more views of the steep hill we are working with...trying to figure out how to stop the mulch from washing down...
  • as I think I've finally almost weeded most areas and am ready for mulch I uncover a hosta garden, begging me to remove weeds and ...ummm...yeah, add mulch!
  • a pond, a bridge...that will take care of some this view...I'd LOVE to be able to have pretty grass before the wedding but that is just not a reality. I have to focus on the gardens and the pathways...NEXT year we will have prettier grass.

The beginning of getting a yard in shape!

When we moved into our house 3 years ago the banks were caving in because the seller had sprayed everything, leaving nothing but death...we started by planting forsythia, then I kept ...»
buying what ever looked good and popping it into the ground. Now what I have is overgrowth and weeds, no grass...but my hubby did build a lovely gazebo. My daughter is wanting to have a wedding in our yard in October...so THIS is the rush to create something worthy for her wedding! All suggestions and idea are wanted!

Oh how I'd love to do that! We will add a pathway and some steps coming down...but I highly ...»
doubt we can afford the flagstone...thinking for now it will just be wood and mulch. This is going to be a process over time though. I will have paths and ponds and lots of mulch this year...maybe next year we will get to add things like flagstone pathways!

  • I already moved that fern someplace else, obviously the plants that are out are JUST temporary to add color in the pic. They didn't help much! Planting this weekend. Giving the pond time to flow and have water checked before more
  • Plant is moved. Electrician will be out next week to fix up the electrical so you won't be seeing that ugly orange cord after that!
  • the gravel in the front of that is temp...plants will fill up the front pockets of the rocks here! Bridge will be built this coming weekend! WooHOO!
  • Through the pergola, down the steps, over the bridge...and then onward to the gazebo to say her vows...still so much finishing work that I can feel panic every waking second...and I don't sleep much!
  • Standing on the bridge shooting straight up...well what will be a bridge in a few more days!...

  • path way has been dug out out from the pergola down to what will become 2 small ponds with lil' waterfall...in the front of the picture you can see a little bit of the dry creek bed that will run from the top of the yard...down!
  • the first picture was from the ponds up to the pergola and house...this one is across the other way where the path will end at the gazebo..hoping you can see 2 holes, bigger 1 and smaller one, in between will be a bridge. 1

The beginning of a couple of ponds and a dry rock bed!

I know this won't look like much but I like to post as we go...the past had pictures of the empty, washed away yard. Then pictures of area's that have had weeds removed, plants ...»
thriving...though they still need color, just waiting for September. Now the pictures of the digger leaving us the START to a dry rock bed, to control the water that washes our yard away...and the 2 small goldfish ponds. I can't wait to show you the finished project...what am I saying? I can't wait to see that myself, haha!

the way of my fun, hehe. My husband will know the gallon size and has the pumps purchased. I actually don't know. I'll tell you sometime next week for sure though. Just finished extending the deck out to the edges of the pergola so lining the dry rock bed and starting the ponds next.

A unique look for any floor!

My husband has tiled, put down wood flooring and after growing weary of doing the same thing over and over...we decided to get creative. I hope you like the new floor as much as we do!
