About Me:

I and am an artist & student in the criminal justice field. I enjoy home renovations and design, cooking, and having as much time with my kids and grand kids as possible.

Favorite area of home improvement:

I am currently building Shoji screen sliding doors for my bedroom closet, and painting an entire 8 x 11 wall with a black, grey, and white mural. I turn out about 2-3 paintings a week for friends and family that are usually 4' x 4'. My next project is a Shoji screen for my bathroom door, hall closet doors and free standing Shoji screen planter/ wall for my living room filled with real bamboo.

Christmas Decorating (like they do in magazines)

Yes, I'm early, but I'm my own boss, so I won't get fired :). I had these lanterns out on my porch for months, and was inspired by Pottery Barn to try this easy decorating trick with ...»
things I already have. This would work with a vase, or a bowl too. So pretty for the foyer.

until I was ready to take it down. These are beautiful and I have done much the same with unfinished wooden bird feeders I purchased at Dollar General for $8 each. I removed the rope, used for hanging and keeping the lid in place, painted them black, added white sand and tealight candles. Very pretty centerpieces! I can change decorations for any season. Not bad for $16 dollars (for 2) and a very short amount of time!

near you and get an electric nail filer. (lind of reminds me of a dremel) and run it over the grout. It really couldn't be much easier. Once you are done, put a new tip on the grinder, sit back, file your nails, and admire your handy work...LOL

  • Years of hard water deposits and grime accumulated ove time.
  • 15 minutes later! Major difference!
  • Start by saturating the entire area with a 60-40 percent mixture of white vinegar and water. Spray the area liberally with a spray bottle and let the mixture sit for a few minutes. This will help loosen everything up
  • Then take an old handy dandy toothbrush and start scrubbing the water deposits. The gunk and hard water deposits will start to break off in little chunks. Then rinse with steaming hot water. 1
  • Now that you have cleaned off the top layer, grab a scouring pad to get the stubborn spots. Just moisten the pad with a little hot water and begin scrubbing the crevices where the remaining water deposits are. 1
  • You can see the blue "soap" from the scouring pad where I had to scrub a little harder than the toothbrush would allow.
  • Now give it one final rinse with hot water and use your dry eraser to clean off smudges. This step kind of "polishes" it off but is not necessary if you don't have any minor surface level scuffs.
  • One final rinse and a wipe down with a paper towel and you are done my friend! And no harmful chemicals were used which is a bonus!
  • Voila! Now your sink faucet shines like a brand new one!!! With a little elbow grease and a couple cleaning tools and supplies you have saved yourself lots of money and can prolong the life of your existing sink and faucet! 1

sinks is a half of raw lemon & plain ole salt! Sprinkle the salt into your sink (doesn't take much) then cut a lemon in half and start rubbing. Only takes a couple of minutes and the sinks are clean and the room smells great!

From Flower planter to dining room light

I re-purposed a black iron flower planter into a ceiling light fixture for my dining room. The landlord does not allow structural changes so this is mounted to the ceiling to cover the existing fixture. The wedges are actually light blue marblized paper.

doesn't allow, like painting the walls, so I have actually bought 4x8 sheets of insullation styrofoam and spot glued (with a hot glue gun) the styro to the walls, and painted it to look like marble, sone murals, and just plain painting to change the walls. Hint: only use hot glue if the walls are painted with at least semi-gloss paint. If it is flat finished wall paint, hot glue will tear the paint off. On a semi-gloss finish, the glue peels right off without leaving a mark. I have a couple of posts of paintings I have done on the styro and even a marbled wall I painted. Check them out and see how well it worked.

How to easily remove grease build-up from your cabinets

This is just a simple little story about how I finally got all the grease off the cabinets above my stove. ...»

I have had a dirty little secret!Everyone always tells me how clean my house is. It's not really. Not since I've had kids. You've seen those cute little signs, Excuse the mess, we are busy making memories or Excuse the mess, we live here? Well that's not really my style. In fact, my house is nothing like the clean it used to be before the kids. I've grown more accustomed to the mess, but so many little things tend to get over looked these days. Many people have exciting goals like running a marathon or skydiving (and I may have just become the biggest loser because I just googled Common goals people have, because I couldn't come up with 2 good ideas), you know what I've always wanted? To put my house on the market and have the ad say, "Mrs. Clean lives here". I'm not kidding, I actually told my realtor I wanted that on my add. She said, your house will sell itself. OK, she was right, but I really wanted that at the time. One thing I've been over-looking lately is my kitchen cabinets. I'm home cleaning today and thought, maybe today's the day to get that grease off the cabinets. Now keep in mind, these are just the cabinets over the stove, and grease is always building up on these cabinets. I wipe down my cabinets frequently, since they are white and show any dirt, but I do tend to "overlook" these top cabinets because I never could seem to get the grime off with much success. I have those god-awful therma-foil and for lack of a better term the surface is "pockey". That means there is a little texture that allows dirt and grease to accumulate. The picture shows best how greasy these cabinets were. I've tried many products before, but today I decided to go for some simple soft scrub and a warm dish rag. I love the lemon scent and use this for a lot of my cleaning. I poured it on my dishcloth and just rubbed it on the grease, and just like that, all of the grease and grime came off. I've tried many other cleaners and de-greasers and seriously never got such great results with barely any elbow grease at all. I might suggest if you are working over your head that you wear some protective eyewear, because trust me when I say, you don't want your break from cleaning to involve trying to get soap out of your eye! Just sayin. Check out the before and afters. It's really pretty amazing!

mild aabrasive that will tend to 'pit' the finish and that leads to the finish literally coming off over time. Vinegar water is a good degreaser for varnished wood.
