A few photos of a recent installation. No more grass, but a nice stone patio, hot tub, and new plantings.

Just sharing a few photos of a recent installation. We will finish it up in about a month when we install the perennials and groundcovers. Although the weather is quite warm, we prefer ...»

The pipes are set to the slope that we need for the pathway. Then, when we screed the sand ...»
with a board (drag the board) the sand is left perfectly smooth across the entire area. It would be nearly impossible to freehand the sand, and even trying would be very time consuming. Since the pipes are not inexpensive, they are removed after smoothing the sand.

Imagine trying to draw a near perfect straight line without a ruler. The pipes serve as our ruler in creating a perfectly smooth sand bed before laying the pavers.

The only Loropetalum that stays small is Purple Pixie. All the other varieties, even those ...»
that claim to stay small, will grow beyond 5 feet tall. We have tried nearly every variety over the years and that is what we have found. If you want to stay under your windows and keep maintenance to a minimum, the other Loropetalums are not a wise choice.

We normally work from strings, then install the edging after the pavers are all down. This way ...»
we can keep the edging tight to the pavers before driving in the spikes. Sometimes, we will set one side first and work from the edging out, but normally we install the edging after.

Actually, not much is skipped in terms of the workload. The hardest steps are digging out the ...»
area, building up and compacting the crushed stone base. Then the sand bedding layer. There is a photo showing the sand finished. With the sand ready, the pavers are laid down very quickly.

Depending on the patttern, there can be very few cuts. Install the edging, sand the joints and compact and it is done. The only steps not shown are us placing the pavers down, installing edging, and adding polymeric sand.

A gravity wall gets its name because it is relying on the weight of the stone and gravity to ...»
remain in place. The wall must be constructed with enough weight, thickness, and batter/slope in order to remain in place with the soil behind the wall trying to push it over. For the walls we build, we dig out and install a crushed stone footing to help stabilize the wall. We then begin shaping and placing the stones until they fit in place. As in these photos, we sometimes shape the stones for a tighter appearance, and other times we build them to look more rustic and natural. In those cases, we do little shaping to the stones.

And if you want to look at some more examples of dry stonework, this guy has published several books and is a very accomplished stone mason in Vermont and New Hampshire http://www.dansnowstoneworks.com/photo-galle...
