About Me:

I'm an avid DIYer and have been at it for many years. I'm also a thrifter and love saving money by hunting down treasures and fixing them up, repurposing them without breaking the bank. Anyone can have a pretty space on a budget! My blog documents my newest project, fixing up a 1979 fixer-upper house that I'll be moving into this Fall. My dad and I are doing most of the work ourselves and it is a true labor of love. I just may be more proud of this house than any other that I've lived it, sweat equity will do that! I have big plans to make it beautiful, all on a budget.

Favorite area of home improvement:

Thrifting and redoing old furniture with paint, finding ways to save money by DIYing it. I love to learn new things constantly.

How to grow JUNK in your garden

I have a litte garden trick I play. When the plants are still fairly young, I'll place selected junk pieces among the young blooms to fill up the garden beds. Not only will your garden ...»
look more lush, you'll have some cool stuff to look at too!

Here's my own collection of garden junk, including a HomeTalk clipboard!

  • After:

We made the "screen" several years ago, using three decorative iron panels, zip tied together.
  • Before:
When our home was built in 2003, the back porch and fireplace were added as an afterthought.
Until this winter, the only ornamentation was the vintage garden gate. We added the shelf for Christmas, temporarily.

A Mantel for the Back Porch Fireplace

There is a point in life when one needs a little help from friends with DIY projects. We asked for help with this project. We stained the mantel, someone put it together for us. ...»

Over the years we've discussed a mantel for the porch fireplace. November 2012, we decided we are definitely not getting any younger and made the decision to get going on the project.

Of course there were a couple of little glitches; weather, time, and health.

The first week of February 2013 the project got underway.

The porch is protected, so we decided to give water based stain a try. We'll see how that goes, for now. #Itching4Spring

Painting: Can you paint laminate cabinets?

I have a friend that wants to paint her cabinets. Have you tried this? Do you know if this is possible?

Yes, definitely! Zinsser has a shellac-based primer that will stick to anything and it is very ...»

  • A 2-toned compass rose filled the entire endcap of the dresser... one on each end.
  • White-washed diamonds were centered on each drawer.
  • Another shot of the compass rose... by far the most complicated thing I've ever painted!
  • Each diamond had to line up and look symmetrical... horizontally and vertically on the dresser.

Adding Details to a Painted Dresser

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, it's only fitting that one of my #ProudestDIY moments involves diamonds and roses. I ...»
may paint and refinish furniture for a living, but I am a far cry from an artist. Painting the diamonds on the drawer front and figuring out the placement and layout of the compass rose on each end terrified me! I had nightmares of diamonds not lining up and the compass roses resembling a mish-mash mess. Seeing the finished result... knowing that I was able to execute a client's vision and design beyond painting the surface of a piece of furniture... it's a good feeling.

  • Adel white Shaker cabinets from Ikea, with creamy white subway tile and gray grout.
  • I especially love these two 36" base cabinets of all drawers. Granite is Kashmire White. 1
  • My island was handmade and I just repainted it gray to flow better with my kitchen.
  • Rustic shelves add a personal touch.
  • This big pantry was also big on my wish list and really comes in handy.
  • The rustic shelves are reclaimed wood from Southern Accents in Cullman, AL. and are my fave thing in my kitchen.
  • A coffee station to the left of the sink is used every morning. The sink is a Blanco granite sink in Metallic Gray and the cute green light fixture is from Ballard Designs.
  • One of the best things I did was to add this 12" open cabinet at the end of the run of base cabinets to house large platters and cutting board. Otherwise, it was just wasted space.

  • Light wall colors help to keep the room fresh and airy. 1
  • Eco-friendly script bamboo mats pull furniture together and provides a cohesive look from room to room. 2
  • The window in the stairwell is not curtained so that ample light will fill the room.
  • A club chair provides comfy seating along a wall wedged between the staircase and laundry room door.
  • A simple wooden star adds interest to the window oddly placed at the bottom of the stairway.
