There is little actual evidence that pine needles acidify the soil, so shade from the trees above may actually have a much larger affect on the success of what grows underneath. Other than the roses, the plants James mentions like some shade as well as acidic soil. Some other shrubs to consider would be drooping leucothoe (Leucothoe fontanesiana), andromeda (Pieris spp.) and summer-sweet (Clethra alnifolia). The latter will fill you garden with a heavenly scent in mid-summer.
