About Me:

I am a 2nd organic gardener! I am learning and trying to landscape my yard. I love DIY or would like to help in projects to the best of my ability. My home needs some serious energy efficiency updates and cosmetic improvements. I want to get my hands on everything but I don't know how to do everything. Because of my limited income and having a disability, I must be very dollar consious and need every Bang for my Buck that I can get! However, I crave quality! This is a very difficult combination!

Favorite area of home improvement:

ENERGY EFFICIENCY UPGRADES, ASTHETICS, AND IMPROVING HOME VALUE!

Can someone tell me if I can lay lynoleum flooring over existing mismatched tile flooring with out taking them out?

And if so, what should I do to the grouting? Or is there any better and economical way to improve the appearance? Thank you.

As far as the grouting goes, I meant sealing the grout to make the floor evenly flat before ...»
adding something on top of it. Otherwise the grout is fine just not completely level with the tiles.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Okay.

My first question. I have a small home that I bought a year and a half ago and it needs to be made more energy efficient. The windows are single pane, the roof needs replacing, the ...»
walls and attic need insulation, and lastly the central heating and air should also be replaced. Since my funds are limited and I may have to do one project at a time, what would be the first thing I should begin with if I am unable to afford all of this to be done at one time and how do I find a contractor that may be able to perform high quality work with quality materials at the lowest possible cost? The home is only a 2 bedroom, one bath with a single garage and has only 1000 square feet? I don't know what elst to add to the question. Thank you.

This was the very exact thing I have done so far. I have a thick clear plastic on the outside ...»
of the windows that is sealed very well. It helps tremendiously cutting down on the electric bill summer and winter and no longer have condensation build up on the inside. Those windows have to go! I exchange the air in the house every morning by opening the doors to the screen doors so the air quality is kept fresh. I am contemplating on the different types of attic insulations and how to accomplish this all cost effectively.

I saw a flock of robins on my lawn this morning.

They are migrating through to their winter homes in South America. It's a reminder to us all to feed them as they pass through. The best food for most songbirds is black oil sunflower ...»
seeds (not a cheap mix with millet and corn). Keep your hummingbird feeders full and don't forget to hang a suet feeder for the woodpeckers and nuthatches.

I'm new to this site, and decided to post pictures of the things that keep me busy .

I like to garden and love repurposing "anything", like the compass you'll see here that I made from an old concrete septic tank cover. Pics that follow are some of my outdoor projects: ...»
made a bottle tree, a fish pond, grew and dried birdhouse gourds, made raised gardens, painted an old bench, painted rug onto my deck, harvested 40' bamboo, cured them and made a trellis, made a peaceful walking/sitting area in the woods out back. I'm a DYI'er that began as a financial necessity and grew into a passion.......By the way, if you haven't talked to the great people at Four Season Nursery yet, or shopped for mulch, gravel and plants, you're missing an opportunity. They are knowledgeable and dependable. My husband just smiles at me and hates to leave me the truck...he knows I'm going there for a load of something.

Green Living: When leaving the house for a few days or longer, what is the most energy efficient temperature to leave your home at?

We set our temperature during the summer at 78. My husband likes to turn it up to 85 when we leave, but it seems it take a lot more energy to cool the house off when we return. Please advise! Thanks!
