About Me:

I am currently homeless (leasing) and looking forward to a hunt in January for an old house that I can love. My passion is in painting, mostly landscapes, all things vintage, antique and beautiful.

Favorite area of home improvement:

Pulling things together. Finding pieces to complete a room or a place in the yard. I love sanding, painting, faux finishes, mixing old and made to look old. Thift and flea market junkie....

Painting: I'm wanting to redo my bedroom in Shabby Chic, but I'm having trouble putting all of my ideas together to make it look

cohesive. I know I can research online or check out flea markets, but I'm hitting some road blocks in that most of the things I find are too big or out of my budget range (such as with a ...»
tv stand) or not airy enough (paint color). I'm also working with a room that has it's space challenges in that though it's 11 x 12, it has two reach in closets, a big pair of windows and a queen size bed...

Whew, anyway... To make a long story short (I know...too late right? ;) ) I'm wondering what you guys have done to help yourselves out of a designing dilemma such as this and if there's any suggestions you might have that I might have overlooked.

I am a big Shabby chic lover too. I like a little less clutter than some though. I must recommend you visit www.pinterest.com and search for tv consoles as well as other taglines (shabby chic, vintage dresser, etc). I would say the first thing to do is pick your colors. Pick 2 or 3 basic colors that will allow you to blend in others sesonally or for pretty finds later. Maybe a piece of art will help. Browse that same website for abstracts or such. When you find the color scheme that you just love try to imagine it in your room. Visualize the each color on the walls, then the trim then the furniture or bedding, switch it up until you are pleased. I hope this helps! Trust me, if you love the colors, you will find everything else falls in place. I notice that on bhg.com and in magazines a room will be coordinated so subtley then when you look at the piece of artwork hanging it has every color in the room pulled together. It is amazing how it pleases the eye!

Windows & Doors: Want a cheap creative way to keep the cold from coming in my windows without sacrificing the daylight they bring.

I've tried clings-useless..Windows seals have been replaced. The glass itself let's in the cold. I've tried curtains/shades..cold just slips in around them. Maybe someone has a unique idea?

Nice. I like the window savers too. I will have to look at them for my next home. I found that ...»
the Eclipse drapes work well to reduce draft. I also used Roman shades that were pretty thick. The combo was nice. Prior to the Eclipse drapes coming on the market I bought the Black Out drape and industrial velcro strips. I sewed peices to fit about 2 inches over the window edge. I put them over my french door windows (western-sunset) and my teens windows. This was for blocking the sunlight (teens) and Summer heat that comes with it. In the winter I found it worked well for that coldness you feel close to a window.

Pest Control: We are under contract to buy a 1919 house.

The inspections showed inactive and some acitve powder post beetles. We are awaiting estimates. I would like some personal stories/experience to help us in decisions on this. Thanks so much!

Windows & Doors: My brothers built and insulated a dog house for me, but I don't know what to use for the door.

Does anyone know where I can get the plastic they use for dog doors, or have any other ideas for me?

Sometimes you can find heavy plastic on large rolls in fabric warehouses.

A couple more pics of my laundry room. I hit the "share" button too quickly while adding pics to my first post!

***I've replaced my original pics with new, hopefully larger ones. Go here if you'd like to see more of the room: http://worthingcourt.blogspot.com/2011/09/ho....

Design & Décor: (1st time user of Hometalk) We are putting down a dark wood laminate in our large rectangular Living room/dining room

area (no boundary between them -- all one room that we will keep very open, with no living room furniture, because we are ballroom dancers). The room is open to the front entry hall and ...»
staircase (dark wood railing, spindles, knewlpost) and with an open door to kitchen (light maple cabinets and countertop). Our 42" x 60" dining room table and 4 chairs are a very similar dark wood. Will that work visually: dark dining room table on dark wood floor?

A natural fiber rug would be attractive under the table or a light colored traditional one. ...»
Otherwise you can simply draw the eye to the table TOP by creating visual interest with a runner or cloth. Post pics when you are done!
