Rebuilding Katrina homes
So the theme of the week is proudest DIY projects. I am taking this excuse to brag about some DIY work my wife and I finished in a bunch of other people's houses. In turn, that gives me a

Happy news about Colorado water
Some of you have heard me complain about Western water law, and the fact that Colorado residents are not allowed to harvest and reuse rainwater or "graywater" from their sinks and bathtubs and washing machines. My state rep is finally doing something about that. That means you can too, all my fellow Colorado Hometalkers. Contact your state rep and tell them to support HB1044, which would allow graywater reuse.

The Death of the Man Cave
All this Man Cave talk today reminds me of an article last year that was essentially an obituary for the man cave. It's a hilarious piece of writing with some great euphemisms for man cave and even a timeline. I also love this graphic.

Green concrete walls
The range of green building materials is growing exponentially. The latest idea I have heard about is a new type of structural concrete that supports the growth of moss, lichen and other organisms.

Heart-shaped bike chain hook
Some of you know I am a sucker for anything made from recycled bike parts. I mean bikes, recycling, what could be better. So just in time for Valentine's Day, I came across this heart-shaped hook made from a bike chain. They sell them here, but it would be really easy to make your own from a discarded chain:

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Light switch problem
So my bedroom light switch stopped working. I thought the old switch had just died, so I switched it with another switch from another room. It seemed to do the trick. The light came back

Green construction trends for 2013
I know a lot of you are interested in green construction. I came across this list of predicted trends for green building in 2013. I am most optimistic about the water issues note. I think all the worthwhile talk and effort regarding energy savings overlooks the importance of water savings: http://www.sustainablebusiness.com/index.cfm...

Starting seedlings in eggshells
Not egg cartons, but egg shells. Spring planting will be here before we know it (the days are already getting longer again, hooray) and I came across the most interesting idea for planting seedlings. I have planted seedlings in egg cartons, then "planted" the carton with seedling, but it never occurred to me to actually plant in empty eggshells. To give credit where due, I stole this idea and picture from this blog:

However, if you have any questions about the St. Bernard Project or anything else, I would be happy to answer them. Also, I smile every time I see your name on Hometalk because the only other Dagmar I have ever known was a wonderful woman whose home we helped rebuild. She then became very active in helping the rest of the community and helping the St. Bernard Project work with the community.
