About Me:

I have been working on all kinds of energy-efficiency, landscaping and aesthetic projects since I bought my first home two years ago. Before I bought this house, I spent several months rebuilding homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. It was an all-volunteer organization, and we all learned to do a little bit of everything. I have all the skills to rebuild a house that is stripped down to the studs (if I have a bunch of extra hands) - and I can probably recommend the least expensive, least complicated way to do it. We were getting people back in their homes for about $10,000 with (mostly) unskilled volunteer labor. Now I own a small 50-year-old ranch home in northern Colorado. I love the location, the big picture window and the funky stone fireplace. I also love small energy bills. I am constantly trying to find ways to save energy around my home.

Favorite area of home improvement:

Energy- and water-efficiency improvements. I have weatherized, added insulation, Xeriscaped the garden, installed low-flow toilets and showers, and I am always looking to do more.

Compost Tea

Great way to take advantage of the irrigation system built into a raised garden bed. After a heavy rainfall, syphon out some of the water, rich with all the nutrients and goodness that have washed through those layers of fertilizer and compost. Use it to water containers, other veggie beds, or reapply.

Gardening: Indoor herb gardens

I am starting an herb garden but I want to do it in my kitchen on the wall so I don't have to go outside if I need some herbs. But my husband wants it to have a modern look. Anyone got some good ideas!?

Do Your Research Before Buying A Major Appliance

I went with a name-brand refrigerator when we bought new appliances for our remodeled kitchen. Unfortunately, I made the wrong choice. It has lots of shortcomings. Read about it here: http://the2seasons.com/2013/02/27/buyer-bewa...

Also, I recommend visiting a good nursery in your area (not the big box store garden section but an independent nursery). These folks might be able to help you find some help:

Office projects to help organize the office!

See how I repurposed floppy disks into desk accessories for better desk organization. I also repurposed wine corks into a shoe mat to have a place to toss the wet snow covered shoes.

I went through a lot of floppy discs in college. I guess that shows how old I am.

  • Use cupcakes not a true cake! You don't need a knife to cut the cake (especially important if you are having your party somewhere other than home). The cupcakes just pull apart!
  • I like buying things I can use more than once. This Playmobil Pirate ship was the perfect centerpiece and it was a great gift for the kids!
  • There are a lot of designers on Etsy who will create a custom invite for you for a nominal fee. They will send you a jpeg of the image.
  • The best time to buy costumes is right after Halloween. I snagged these 3 piece costumes from Little Tykes for .99 each! Score!
  • Every kids party needs games! To keep things in budget I was determined to make all of mine. This is Walk the Plank. Cost virtually no money.
  • We used a plastic kiddie pool filled with Sandbox sand. I filled the box with an array of pirate swag. Gold necklaces, plastic jewels, pirate rings, and gold coins! I gave each pirate a treasure bag and they went digging!
  • And boy did they dig! How many kids can you fit in a sand box??

Silhouettes

When I was little we had some silhouette's of my older siblings in frames around the house. Recently I saw some silhouette's online and thought it would be easy and fun to make some of my own!
