About Me:

Hi, I'm Sue, and I own the blog House Pretty (sue@housepretty, since someone took the name since mine started). My goal is to turn our "diamond in the rough" house into a pretty home, without breaking the bank! We are doing it one DIY at a time.

Favorite area of home improvement:

I love to paint and do landscaping. I have slowly started to get my hands on some power tools.

A little walkway out of pallet boards

This quick little project really couldn't be easier! Reclaimed pallet boards were used to create a new walkway through a flower bed. The planks make it an absolute dream to weed by simply ...»
lifting the applicable board, and are just high enough to clear any water run off. And yes, they are staying in place and have shown no rot in over 3 years thus far.

This is for Joyce: You can get free pallets from many stores, They are used to pack and ship ...»
freight. I am in Canada, and they are offered on Kijiji (Craigslist for you in the U.S.) all the time for free. They are just a burden for stores to get rid of, which is a bonus for those of us wanting them, lol!

Painting: Can you paint laminate cabinets?

I have a friend that wants to paint her cabinets. Have you tried this? Do you know if this is possible?

Yes, you can indeed paint laminate cabinets! I'm actually going to do that to our kitchen ...»
cabinets in our cottage next summer. And, I have my husband's blessing, lol! My friend over at The Simple Craft Diaries, has talked about a primer that she swears by, that she used on a laminate shelving unit in her updated bathroom. She has said the primer is super durable. Good luck!

  • If you have a small blank wall, you have room for a floor to ceiling mattress spring bulletin board. 3
  • Putting the puzzle together with random junk pieces. Hmmm.. how will I do this?
  • First off, the rusty works got a good brushing with a BBQ brush to knock off the loose rust. Then a clear spray to protect YOU from needing a tetanus shot. (tip: use satin spray because old stuff is never shiny)
  • This cute little outdoor plant older grabbed from a friend's dump pile received a bulletin board centre and stain to pretty it up. And the rest is history.

When a mattress spring does a lot more than let you sleep in.

The day I brought home this rusty mattress spring, I questioned my sanity for about 3 seconds. Once this bulletin board idea came to me, I couldn't mount it on the wall fast enough! It ...»
helped to organize my chaotic paperwork filled life to a rusty springy T.

At the time, this project (done back in 2010) and concept was new. Have you tried one yet? You'll love it!

Sweet combination

I combined a bit of annuals with my perennials for this result. I think it turned out pretty. What do you all think? Behind (almost in bloom) is Becky Daisy. Angelonia, Verbena, Stokesia, &

Coreposis.

Recycling salvaged pieces to decorate a bedroom

I love the local Habitat Restore...people donate anything and everything so the proceeds help build homes for the needy. I bought a $20 arched window that had been salvaged from a large house to use for a headboard. Also used $2 yard sale shutters for window treatment (an idea I saw on Pinterest). An old mirror I had laying around and a sewing table were painted white to use as a writing table or makeup table in a guest bedroom.

Organize those seed packets

If you're like most folks, your seed packages end up in a shoebox, or bound together with a rubber band, and you have to dig through them hoping to find what you know is there when ...»
planting time comes. Over on vegetablegardener.com, Greg Holdsworth provides step-by-step directions for an organized storage system:
