  • The solar light was almost the same size as the jar ring
***UPDATE Don't hot glue gems to the outside, they may fall off :(
  • This is after glued flat sided gems around the jar ring and around the little edge on the bottom of the clear part of the light. This little part was where the cylinder and spike were to put the light into the ground.

Another Solar Light In A Jar

A big thank you to Melissa @ Keep Calm and Decorate for inspiring me to make solar lights in jar. This is my twist on your ...»
idea, THANKS again for your inspiration

I found solar lights at Walmart that were pretty much the same size as the top of a canning jar. I bought a box of a dozen clear generic canning jars at Walmart. And I bought bags of flat florist gems at the dollar store.

I removed the cylinder with the ground spike from the solar light and put a thin line of clear silicone caulk around the outside of the jar ring then put the light on top. After the caulk dried attach flat florist gems around the jar ring and around the little edge at the bottom of the clear shade of the solar light. Then I threw in about 50 florist gems inside the jar for stability outside along my wall. I wanted to use red gems but they didn't have any. Next trip to the Dollar Store :)

  • To access the socket...and place a bulb I cut the bottoms of these decanters off with my wet saw. I'd love to say that there is an easier way to do that...but trust me...I've tried all those tutorials online...and there's just not! 7
  • I took a silver plated platter from Goodwill and drilled holes through it, so that the bottles would hang at the varying heights that I like...and then attached chain on the top sides.
  • I purchased three screw on sockets from the local hardware store. By cutting a galvanized pipe and using washers...it allowed the weight of the bottle to rest on the pipe, and not the glass. 2

How I use old bottles

Back about a year ago, I started this little hairbrained idea, and never finished it. With the restrictions of surgery...I've been trying to do lighter projects, mostly unsuccessful, but ...»
this one came back in my mind. But cutting the bottoms off of these old decanters, and joining them with a little goodwill platter....I have a great chandelier...pendant...swag...or whatever you want to call it. It would be perfect for over a little bar, in a mancave, or even on a patio....I'm so glad I finally did this! I feel a tutorial in the future! This isn't a tutorial...but I can see from the reactions that one is in order. Making a chandelier of any kind is not difficult, but there are some steps involved. In this project there are more than the normal list of supplies...mostly because these are hanging...and they are glass. I wanted the weight of the lights to be distributed out a little further on the glass, and the openings were large so therefore, I used washers. The tutorial for this project is going to have to be pretty detailed...but really not difficult. Each bottle is made a little different, so if you are going to do this...you may want to do what I did...take your bottles...and sit down in the isle of your hardware store...and play with different washers and nuts till you get the mix right. I will amend my post on the website...and show you the parts involved, and how I pieced them together. #repurposing&upcycling #DIYprojects #recycle

  • My original beloved Fairyball. 16
  • This is where my Fairyball piece sits in one of my shade gardens. Its on the left of this photo. 3
  • Oh no! A deadly mishap! Had to replace it with a temporary one this morning. 4
  • This is the TOP of the hole that is drilled in the log with the strand of lights plugged into the extension cord that is fished up through the hole in the log.
  • Feeding the lights into the INSIDE of the gazing ball.
  • Lights all inserted into the INSIDE of the gazing ball. This is how the ball will sit in the crook of the log.
  • I tape the extension cord and the end of the strand of lights together with electrical tape so they cannot fall back through that long hole in the log! Helps keep any moisture out too.
  • This is how the gazing ball sits on the log. No glue necessary. it just rests in the crook with the stem in the hole. Now I'll take some moss and cover up the transition.
  • All finished until I find a new gazing ball... 2

Lighted gazing ball

This is my lighted gazing ball that I lovingly refer to as my "Fairyball". It's made from a standard gazing ball that can be purchased at most garden or craft centers and an old log we ...»
fished out of a river while camping. We let it dry for a year, then drilled a hole right up through the center and ran an extension cord up through the hole to plug the strand of lights into. Colored LED lights have been the best string of lights because they do not get hot inside the glass ball and burn out. Its on a timer and glows 365 days a year down in my shade garden.
