Mary, I couldn't agree with you more. I consider it an important lesson learned from this ...»
project. My initial layout did not consider the location of the wall switch, although the options may have been limited for dealing with it. For instance, the top of chairrail was bounded by the medicine cabinet and vanity light. However, I could have explored changing the width of rails/stiles if the switchplate issue were noticed during the layout process. Folks should also remember that beadboard installs may require bigger casings and bringing out switches and outlets.

  • I got this idea about framing in the beadboard from Next Day Moulding
  • Had to install a beefier door casing to match the thickness of the new rails.
  • The Before shot with tile extending around the bathroom
  • If you search the web for beadboard bath installations, they never mention that you really need to remove the vanity to get it right.

  • Returned the moulding into the wall at this end before the bathtub.

Beadboard Bathroom Re-do

Here, my client wanted to do away with the wall tile surrounding her bathroom and replace it with beadboard. The only solution, imo, was to remove the wallboard & tile and built up from ...»
there. For this installation, the beadboard was inserted inside a frame comprised of 1x stock and the seams were then covered with trim.

I love the beadboard look.. The trim would have looked nicer if the light switch would have ...»
been moved over a little and down a little so it would have been a cleaner installation.

L shaped Walnut Slab desk

Working on for a client...Starting with large thick walnut slabs from a local sawyer. First step was jointing a flat edge and gluing up the three main boards. Surface was flattened ...»
using old world tools and techniques...(my power planer can not handle 40" stock)

Next up rip and joint the remaining slabs for the narrower return part of the L shape.

stay tuned for more progress

Got this installed last week at the clients home

Word. We've been using the Makita power planers on a framing job (decided to go to school for ...»
carpentering...). They make quick work of rough planing. I was looking at a No. 8 Stanley Sweetheart at a tool sale and this old timer tells me, "you'll only use that thing once." I figure that if I'm ever going to need to smooth out large slabs like that you really need the larger reference face.

Laptop Desk from Scrap

Here's a laptop desk I recently threw together from scrap 1/2" birch ply and an old 3" foam mattress pad. The desktop was cut with a jigsaw, shaped with a drum sander attachment on a ...»
standard drill, and then rounded over with a router. It was finished with Deft sanding sealer and three coats of lacquer (allowed to cure for a week). For the bottom, a fabric square was stapled over a piece of 1/4" mdf and the foam. The pillow assembly was affixed to underside of desk with a low VOC construction adhesive which was allow to cure overnight with pressure on top (three cans of paint).

Sorry to add to your list, KMS! I hear ya on the unheated subterranean workspace. I have to ...»
bundle up and throw on a few space heaters to get anything done down there. Colorado's getting a rare arctic blast it seems.

Homemade Saddle Rack

Here is another project from shop scraps. I built this saddle rack for my wife's dressage saddle from 3/4" plywood, 1/2" plywood, iron-on birch edging, and select pine 1x6 ripped to 1 ...»
1/2" for the slats. It was sized based on the profile of her saddle. The unit was assembled with biscuits (to function as tenons for the shelf), dadoes, glue, and a few pins to hold the slats in place during glue-up. After it gets a few coats of polyurethane, I'll add a garment hook to one side for other equipment. The shelf below can hold boots, gloves, helmet, etc. I routed the horse silhouette freehand from a printout sketched onto the side.

Gardening: Cadillac of compost bins

Just finished replacing a compost bin for friends who garden mightily in the city. My clients were tired of tree roots growing up thru the bottom of the old bin, so we made this one sit ...»
atop stone and fabric with a bottom of composite decking.

Since they wanted this to last and didn't have the budget for cedar, they went with pressure-treated. HD here now sells Weathershield, a micronized copper quaternary, that is said to be safer than past lumber treatments like CCA and ACQ. The lids are to deter their very inquisitive dog.

Each bin is approximately 3'x3' square (looking from above), and roughly 3' tall. First I ...»
built a 3x9 rectangle as a base out of pt 2x4 (with one joist running the long way in the middle. I affixed 2x4 posts to the outside of the base using screws. Then I laid composite decking, which overhangs the base 1.5" and extends to the outside edge of all posts. I added steel connectors to give the posts a better tie to the base on top of the decking. The posts are tied together with 2x4 stock laid on top. One of my earlier comments contains some additional measurement info, but unfortunately I don't have any written plans -- kinda built it as I went.
