Home Maintenance & Repairs: Insulating and sound proofing a walk out basement

just put in supply/ductwork/return down there so now with all the bulk I'm going to be going with a drop ceiling. Someone mentioned Vinyl tiles for the ceiling for sound proofing. I'm guessing that may be something different than the actual regular ceiling tiles so I will have to do some quick searching..

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Is it possible to insulate existing garage doors?

Most problems with insulating a garage door come from drafts around the edges and bottom. ...»
Adding material to a garage door increases the overall weight of the door and can throw off the balance of the springs. If you add weight to the door then you should also change the springs to compensate for the additional weight. I have found that the cost of buying these insulation kits and re balancing a garage door is not very cost effective. Adding foam to a hollow door will make it quieter but is not enough to make a big difference in weather sealing. A three layer insulated garage door with properly installed weather seal trim and a good fit to the floor is the best way to keep out the cold and hot weather in your garage.

Remodeling: Basement Renovation - Need help!

We are going to start a basement renovation this summer, but if I'm going to do it I want it done RIGHT. So tell me... where do we begin because I am overwhelmed with the thought of it. ...»
Our basement is probably 1,500 sq ft and I already have a wish list... Office/Scrapbooking room, Playroom/Lounge Area, Dance/Exercise Room, Bathroom, etc. The bathroom is roughed-in, but other than that it's just concrete floors and walls. Should I get a Designer/Architect to make the most of the space I want to create and get the decor I want? If I do that is it going to cost an outrageous amount? Any and all advice is much appreciated!

Carpet Squares in Basement

After working for an architect for over 20 years, I amassed a collection of commercial carpet tiles over the years that were discontinued. I didn't have enough to finish the whole ...»
basement ...but I found some at Ollies here in Ohio pretty cheap. So overall, it cost me about $150 to do almost the whole basement, minus one storage area and a raised platform area (which I'm eventually going to do a paper bag floor on). These are perfect for a basement .....they have a rubber backing, so no need for a carpet pad. And if there is ever a mess, just pick it up, clean or replace ...Simple!! A good DIY project .....just need sharp box cutter to cut tiles with. As I was doing the carpet, I took a little bit off at a time so that I could get a tight fit. Ended up doing a lot more cutting that way, but didn't waste any carpet tiles due to overcutting. Whew, what a job this was ...after taking out all the old nasty carpeting that had been there for over 20 years. I took a pic of my current project, I'm in the process of working on .... I'm crocheting a small throw rug out of some jute I've had laying around for years. The lighting isn't that great in my pics, the carpet looks a lot better in person.

Garage Organization for a Family of 10

Most families have lots of stuff packed into their garage - kids toys, bikes, sports equipment; dad's tools and mom's hobby supplies. Multiply that by 2 or 3 times and you calculate the ...»
amount of stuff this St Louis family needed to put away.

Fortunately they came to Garage Designs of St Louis for help.

We started by building in His and Hers work benches so mom and dad would have a dedicated work space for their projects. The remaining wall space in their 3-car garage was lined with StoreWALL - super versatile weather-proof bug-proof slatwall panels. The wall panels support a multitude of hooks, shelves and baskets that are designed to hold practically anything. Even a small nook under an interior stairwell was utilized. Every square inch of this garage now has a purpose.

Mission accomplished!

My husband is a building construction teacher at our local high school. Come see what he came up with for our garage doors and the other improvements we added as well.

All on our little bitty budget.

A lot of folks have asked and yes we do use our garage door openers.

Hubby was able to adjust for the added weight and he did upgrade a few parts.

Update on basement floor done by Amazing Improvements

We had our basement floor stained by Amazing Improvements. We finally chose colors and painted. We thought we'd post a photo of a section that's mostly finished but shows the flooring off. Feels homey to us and the concrete doesn't feel cold. It's been great with 4 dogs and kids. A good choice for the way we live.
