Studio Ideas

I'm desperately in need of a studio shed and am looking for architectural plans and ideas. Advice, suggestions? I'd like to steer clear of the cookie cutter Home Depot / Lowes sheds ...»
(although they can be cute too!) and use as much salvaged material as possible.

Adding a mudroom to our garage

In our previous home, we didn't have a nice laundry room. It was tiny and stuck in our master bedroom. To help sell our home, we decided to ad a laundry/mudroom inside our two car garage. ...»
It led into our kitchen. We also had a two car detached garage, so there was still plenty of room to park our cars.

We built a small room to hold our washer and dryer, and my husband also built a custom shoe storage bench and coat hangers. I LOVED the shoe storage bench. My four boys would lift up the bench seat and put their shoes in their "box." Best thing we ever did! Hope to do the same thing in our new house some day!

Stop the Garage Madness! 5 Organization Essentials

Your garage was designed for one simple mission: to protect your car from the elements. But somewhere along the way, its responsibilities...expanded. And now it's crammed with tools, luggage, a lawnmower, holiday decorations, bicycles, car parts, unused furniture, paint cans...the list goes on. And on. And on.

Stop the garage madness! Give this overworked space a break and create some wiggle room for your vehicle by adding a sense of order. Here are five essential ...»

organization additions that'll help you control the garage clutter:

1. Pegboards. Think of pegboards as the Swiss Army knife of garage organization – they can handle almost any mess. Cover a wall or two with pegboards and you can hang anything from tennis rackets to tools where they're easy to grab. You can find pegboard hooks at your local hardware store, and there are a variety of options depending on what you want to organize. We like this 52-piece set by Stanley Tools (it's only $9). Before buying, just make sure the hooks are the right size for your pegboard (otherwise they'll fall out!). Design Tip: Add a little décor-oomph to your garage by painting your pegboards a bright color.

Basement Remodel

This was your typical 1950's basement that had been finished, or should I say attempted to, several times. All attempts were not completely thought through. Ceiling heights were so low ...»
that when you would come down the stairs, you had to turn your to the side, or else! The washer & dryer were tucked away in a dark unfinished corner, by the back door and windows had been covered over. This was bad......everything needed to come out (including stairs)!

By pulling the stairs back, and creating a winder at the top, this brought them back enough to clear the support beam everyone was hitting their head on. A small hallway along side the stairs leads to a 3-piece bath. To the left of that hallway we created a nice finished laundry room, with folding counter and separate sink. All mechanicals, including ductwork & plumbing, was re-routed. This allowed for the most possible ceiling head-room and really clean-up the ceiling. Windows were opened and trimmed-out, allow for some natural light. Recessed lights were added to make up the difference.
