Remodeling: Cobb county residentual permits and inspections

I purchased a home with an unfinished basement. It has framing/installation/some electrical and roughed in plumbing. So I spoke with an Licensed electrician about wiring it out to code ...»
and him pulling a permit. He advised me if he pulled the permit it would have to be for the full job not just electric so it would be better if I pulled an home owners inspection permit because I'm doing the basement in stages. I called and requested this and I was told it was 71.50 a sq ft and 4.50 per something else. Well I have 1200 Sqt so just adding that together that tells me that can't be right as that is about 85,000 bucks. I question why it would be so much to to finish my basement and was told thats the system and they hung up on me. I called back and got someone else and rephased the question still to get told they needed to know the full amount I was going to spend to finish the basement.

Anyone have any insight on this?

During the last week heavy rain, I notice in one corner of my basement there is water leaking. Whom should I call to fix it? Or is this something home owner to fix it himself?

Home Maintenance & Repairs: What is the best way to waterproof your basement?

We just bought a 1920s home that leaks in all four corners of the basement. We are working on resloping the yard and fixing gutters. Any suggestions on how to waterproof the basement itself? Sealant on the outside? inside?

just put in supply/ductwork/return down there so now with all the bulk I'm going to be going with a drop ceiling. Someone mentioned Vinyl tiles for the ceiling for sound proofing. Remodeling: Basement Renovation - Need help!

We are going to start a basement renovation this summer, but if I'm going to do it I want it done RIGHT. So tell me... where do we begin because I am overwhelmed with the thought of it. ...»
Our basement is probably 1,500 sq ft and I already have a wish list... Office/Scrapbooking room, Playroom/Lounge Area, Dance/Exercise Room, Bathroom, etc. The bathroom is roughed-in, but other than that it's just concrete floors and walls. Should I get a Designer/Architect to make the most of the space I want to create and get the decor I want? If I do that is it going to cost an outrageous amount? Any and all advice is much appreciated!

Home Maintenance & Repairs: How can I clean out an old drywell?

At the bottom of my concrete outside basement steps is a small round perforated steel drain plate. I assume that this leads to a drywell, but over the course of 60+ years, the well is ...»
completely full of silt and mud. Water that collects at the bottom of the stairs eventually drains out (over a period of days) but a heavy rain will quickly overwhelm the area, and water comes in under the basement door.

I haven't been able to pry the drainplate off, but could probably chip out enough concrete to do that if I thought I could get the muck out of the well by removing it.

Covering the basement stairs is a possibility, but not an easy one in this case.

Any suggestions?

Just be weary of inside system repairs. As these are the most common types and can offer a ...»
solution to most issues. These inside systems are NOT water proofing but water control systems. The only true water proofing system is one where they dig to the footing in the suspected area, Reseal the foundation with new more modern sealants and membranes, correct the drainage tile that should have been there and back fill properly with clean gravel and soils near the top.

Many people think that pitching the soil is the solution, while this may slow down the water entry, water can move sideways underground,. This is called a spring. It is not a cheap way of preventing water from coming into your house, but it is the right way to do this. Check with your insurance company, you may have some sort of coverage that protects you if the system that holds the water out fails. And in your case it has.
