Weird sewage smell in basement?

I have a 2002-built brick home near Atlanta, Georgia. Just a few days ago I noticed a very strong smell (smelled sort of like a dead mouse or something) in my basement and upon further ...»
investigation it was coming from a small closet that has a sink and big pipe (which may be a sewage pump ejector, I'm not exactly sure) running from the upper floor to the ground. I have never noticed this smell before. I think it had rained the day that happened.

Again, today, the smell came back but it smells more like sewage. We do have a septic tank, and we had issues with it leaking into our lawn a few years ago and we got the entire tank replaced I believe.

Any tips? Is this smell dangerous (eg methane buildup) or is it harmless and disgusting?

Cobb county residentual permits and inspections

I purchased a home with an unfinished basement. It has framing/installation/some electrical and roughed in plumbing. So I spoke with an Licensed electrician about wiring it out to code ...»
and him pulling a permit. He advised me if he pulled the permit it would have to be for the full job not just electric so it would be better if I pulled an home owners inspection permit because I'm doing the basement in stages. I called and requested this and I was told it was 71.50 a sq ft and 4.50 per something else. Well I have 1200 Sqt so just adding that together that tells me that can't be right as that is about 85,000 bucks. I question why it would be so much to to finish my basement and was told thats the system and they hung up on me. I called back and got someone else and rephased the question still to get told they needed to know the full amount I was going to spend to finish the basement.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Permits! UGH! But keep in mind that you do not just get a permit--you have to get it signed ...»
off on, or you may run into trouble down the road trying to sell the house. And if you put in something that is not legal, i.e., a staircase to steep and not to code, that will haunt you! It is best to play by the rules. But you can use some reclaimed materials that can keep your cost down. You certainly do not want to put in extra fancy stuff and then not expect your assessment to go way up! TIP: For all DIY projects, know that we have "Habitat for the Humanities Resell" stores in the Atlanta area. Worth checking them out!

What is the best way to fix water leaking in the basement?

During the last week heavy rain, I notice in one corner of my basement there is water leaking. Whom should I call to fix it? Or is this something home owner to fix it himself?

  • Custom shelving and shoe storage bench. The black door to the right leads to the kitchen. The door on the left leads to the garage.
  • We did board and batten on the walls and made a shelf above the washer and dryer.
  • This is our shoe storage bench that I LOVED! The boys each had a box to put their shoes in.
  • This is the before picture of our garage. The black door led into our kitchen. We added this new mudroom/laundry room from the door over to the right wall of the garage.

Adding a mudroom to our garage

In our previous home, we didn't have a nice laundry room. It was tiny and stuck in our master bedroom. To help sell our home, we decided to ad a laundry/mudroom inside our two car garage. ...»
It led into our kitchen. We also had a two car detached garage, so there was still plenty of room to park our cars.

We built a small room to hold our washer and dryer, and my husband also built a custom shoe storage bench and coat hangers. I LOVED the shoe storage bench. My four boys would lift up the bench seat and put their shoes in their "box." Best thing we ever did! Hope to do the same thing in our new house some day!

What is the best way to waterproof your basement?

We just bought a 1920s home that leaks in all four corners of the basement. We are working on resloping the yard and fixing gutters. Any suggestions on how to waterproof the basement itself? Sealant on the outside? inside?
