Basement Reveal

We finished our basement last winter, but with the cold weather settling in, we've been using it a lot more. I love it so much and never shared it much before since I was so new to blogging.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Basement crawl space odor...eewww!

Hi everyone. OK..so although I do like our "new to us" home, the crawl space is an unfinished area....with a sand/dirt/gravel floor. Here's the problem: It has an odor that seems to permeate the house at times...especially now that the AC is not running and neither is the furnace. It does seem to "travel" through the duct work.

I know if we'd cement the floor that probably would fix it. But that's not really in the plans just yet. Any other ideas on how to help eliminate the odor? ...»

It's not awful...just would be nicer if it wasn't there at all or even less of it. Kind of an "earthy" smell.

I've heard a few "fixes" but would like to see what you guys recommend. Thanks! As always there's bound to be great ideas from the Hometalk network.

Yes there is a tiny bit of moisture there in the sand of the floor...but I suspect if there is ...»
any moisture left from that dripping pipe (now repaired), then it'll take awhile for all the moisture to dry up. We do have the dehumidifier going 24/7.

I've put baking soda & vinegar down the drains to clean. I'll try spraying bleach on the crawl space floor. We'll see if that takes away the smell. I'm beginning to think the odor is a combination of smells that accumulate. Older house....older smells.... It's not unbearable...just not quite the nice clean smell our former house had. But honestly, even that house would get what we'd call "basement-y" in spring before we turned on the dehumidifier. That smell was our cue to turn it on.

I think we've ridden this horse in the race as long as we can :-) Thanks ever so much for all your help! I truly appreciate it.

  • inside garage door

When it rains even slightly I have water running into my garage and under the door.

The previous owner tried to caulk the wood molding at the bottom but that gave away a long time ago. This has now gotten to the point that the sheetrock inside the garage on this wall is ...»
becoming damaged and needs replacing. I tried making little cuts in the concrete here to divert the water away and it works if there is just a sprinkle anything more and I get what you see in the pictures.

Does anyone know of something I could do or use to block the water from coming in? I have thought of using thin brick pavers or some other sort of "hump" but im not really sure whats the best route. Id rather only have to do it once than to keep coming back and trying everything under the sun.

Any suggestions?

Dark Basement Becomes A Cozy Family Room

Our basement was dark and bland, and the layout was strange with no where to put the sofa, without closing the room in. It was not fun to play in for our daughter, and it was a hard room ...»
to hang out in with friends. We repainted the room a dusky purple, got a new sofa, and completely got rid of our bookshelves and almost all of our books (we went digital)! A new rug and accessories helped to update the space. A new tv mounted above the fireplace cut down on furniture, leaving more floor space, and I made a coffee table out of repurposed pallets!
