Garage Door Maintenance

Hi Everyone,

My neighbors were discussing garage door problems this past weekend so I decided to assemble a tutorial. If you're interested in how to keep your garage door safe and working efficiently check out the blog post by clicking here http://www.homerepairtutor.com/garage-door-m...

There's a blooper video in the post that my daughter helped make :) ...»

It involves a pink Hello Kitty bike, baseball helmet, and me. You have to laugh at yourself every once in awhile. LOL.

Have a great 4th of July!!

Jeff

  • Nailing slats to the studs provided space to store oars, fishing poles, & baseball bats. For balls, we nailed a "U" shape (top & bottom), drilled holes, & attached bungee cords into the holes.
  • 2x4s nailed to the studs create a ladder to the loft.
  • Shelves for muddy shoes were built to the left of the laundry room door. These were made by cutting wood to form braces, nailing them into the wall & then nailing a shelf into the braces.

Storage solution idea to share.

I've done this for my last two homes. Utilize the space that the beam going through your garage allows for. Used 8"x8" Hvy Duty L-braces (not shelf brackets). 1x12 MDF, and Screen bead. ...»
The screen bead is to keep items from vibrating off the shelf onto you car or head. Just screw the brackets into the 2x4's surrounding the beam, I used Durarock square drive screws, work very well. I can store all kinds of things from spray cans, 12 pk soda, extra tissue, whatever. Be sure if you have seams on the 1x12, put the seam on a brace. Be sure to get some short wood screws, to screw from the bottom of the L-bracket up into the board also. The brace has 3 screw holes per side, but only need to use 2 of them for this.

    Good question Steve. ...»

It is not a fire hazard. The electrical is grounded and works on a timer. There is an element that heats the lava rocks to 170 degrees. You can create steam by pouring water on top of the rocks. As with anything electrical you wouldn't let children or adults touch the stones as they will be extremely hot to touch.

You can do it but I would leave it to the experts. Since you are cutting a hole in the concrete foundation you have to make sure you are waterproofing everything correctly and not messing ...»

Home Maintenance & Repairs: carport canopy supports advice

I am writing this for hubs......

We have a 20 ft deep single carport canopy. One end is attached to the eave of mhome and ...»

the outside edge is supported by 3 support columns, under a 20 ft aluminum I-beam. 2 problems have shown up. One, is that the supports are typical mobile home type, two square aluminum channels with scrolling; once bent, never strong again. The center support is right where the car doors open; that's a nuisance! Original plan was to take center support out and put 2 new supports further away from center, which would make a total of 4 supports. I ran into 2 actual canopy channels appr 3x3 sq. I have chiseled out a hole in asphalt approx 4-5 inches sq, and am down to gravel base rock. Not having a solid, measureable base, I'm wondering how to proceed; I have to pre-cut the length of these channels.

Becky- to answer your question, I let me wife paint. ...»

I saved a lot of money since I worked in the Granite field at that time, I went to my boss and asked him to show me which slabs of granite he had trouble selling, or has had in stock for a while. By fabricating and installing it myself (I just so happen to be the CNC guy) I was able to get it for about a car payment. We chose to purchase unfinished cabinets from Lowes and stain/lacquer it ourselves. This was also a big cost savings. I extended the depth on two of the uppers and took out the plywood in the door and replaced it with glass that I tinted (auto tint). Natural travertine tile floor and back splash was fun. I knew I was saving money by doing the work so I decided to buy a nice tile saw with a moving bed from Home Depot. One thing I learned from all of this is if you are going to do your own work and not hire it out, save the headaches and buy some good equipment (or rent). I did, however, hire out the plumbing and electrical.

The funny part is, I designed this when I worked first shift and drank, now that I work nights, I have no desire to drink! I still go down there and think about the memories of building it.
