Love My New Retractable Clothesline

I know, I know. . . it looks like Ma, Pa and Lil Junior have their laundry out to dry, but save the jokes and share the clothesline love. Drying clothes outdoors is great for the ...»
environment, pocketbook and clothing, and now I finally have one.

My laundry room is right off my kitchen and on hot days I can really heat up the house if I'm feeling particularly domestic (okay, so maybe it doesn't happen very often, but the point is that it does happen). While I finally have a main floor laundry, I don't have direct access to the backyard without trekking through the basement. It was my husband who suggested a deck-sized line might work, and that was the all the urging I needed to locate a small 20 foot retractable line for about $13.00 at Home Depot. They also carry a 40 foot version for under $20.00.

The line was super easy to install and is small enough to stay unobtrusive (unless it's strung out across your tiny deck with swimwear pinned along it). I was so excited to hang my laundry on the line for the first time, no matter how it looked (thankfully the neighbors don't have a clear view). Maybe it's because I know it's a great alternative to heated drying or because I can't help but think of my Nannie and her old clothesline; but for whatever reason, it makes me smile. . . and this is laundry we're talking about.

  • Beaten up old bucket with a brass eagle on the other side.
  • I decided on a golden wheat color with streaks of barn red and added a whitewash. I lightly sanded it down to expose some of the wood.
  • Add some buttons and it makes a perfect container for my magazines.

Magazine Bucket

I love to go to garage sales, and something about this bucket called to me.

DIY Powdered Laundry Detergent

I made this recipe of laundry detergent for $2.49, which lasted a month for my family of 5 - roughly 40 loads of laundry. I have been very happy with how clean out clothes are and it's great for my kids who have skin allergies.

  • Yucky!
  • Sandpapering the insole. The top layer of the suede comes off but that's okay. It's hard to believe.
  • Not perfect. Not new. But not embarrassing anymore.
  • Pretty darn clean.

How to Clean Suede

I brought out my summer sandals and found that the suede insoles were very soiled looking. See below. ...»

I remembered my mother saying that you could clean suede with sandpaper. I thought, 'Wow, that's weird' and it stuck in my head. So I tried it!

Guess what? It WORKS!!

Has anyone ever tried this?

I think it will work on any brushed leather (suede)... but be careful when trying this... try an inconspicuous place first. In my case, it didn't matter because I was ready to throw these sandals out. So whether I ruined them, it didn't matter. But it worked!!! YAY!

Thanks for viewing. Linda

Oh wow! thank you for this tip. I have a favorite suede jacket that got a four inch oil stain ...»
on the front. I nearly ruined it completely with soap and water (DO NOT DO THIS) so stuck it in the camping-only stuff. Couldn't wait to try the sandpaper. Very gently in circles i worked from the outside of the stain and on the edges the stain is gone. The center of the stain is still there but looks almost like a natural flaw. I tried it on the zipper area and tops of pockets-- worked great

My jacket is now wearable again for any outdoor activity.

  • If you look closely you'll see that my husband labelled the label maker. I think he might be making fun of me....
  • ... I can't imagine why. I mean, isn't it nice to know where the cereal goes?
  • Or Lucy's shoes?
  • And anyone who looks in the closet can find a sun hat. That's important here in San Diego!
  • With the addition of my Silhouette machine, I am able to take my love of labeling to a whole new level! Check out these custom vinyl labels on my gift wrap drawers.
  • Tell me this isn't just a little bit appealing?

(And if it isn't, feel free to make fun of me. You'll be in good company.)
