Painting: Help with Curb Appeal - unsure what color to paint shutters, door, etc

My house has a tin roof that is a burgundy shade, but I think burgundy door and shutters is overkill. Please help me figure out another color that will complement it. I am thinking black ...»
shutters and perhaps a white door to make it stand out more. Thanks!

I guess I'm a bit confused as to the opposition of white shutters, with another colored door? ...»
She has white accents, and the shutters would enhance, not do harm aesthetically speaking. The door could be anything, really, due to the yard she has. Even a Grass GREEN!!! It would tie everything together and look welcoming.

  • This is the front of the house. The brick really is red, the shadows from the trees are making it look brown. Notice the two windows on the second floor.
  • This it the back of the home. Another nice porch off the kitchen.

Painting: What color?

We just bought this nice dark red brick home. As you can see, it looks rather plain. All the trim and the front and back porches need painted. We would really rather not paint it the ...»
traditional white with black or dark green trim. We want this home to not look like every other red brick home in the area. We're also thinking about shutters to break up all the red brick, especially on the second floor. The porches are amazing and actually fairly large and we really want to make them pop and still look inviting. Any suggestions?

you want to paint the brick, I think light color shutters (maybe cream instead of white) and adding columns would help. You may also want to consider adding a copper roof to the front porch. That would set you apart from the other homes. I would also consider adding blue stone or slate to the steps on front, and landscaping to add the brightness and color you want. Your house is boxy, so adding some round shapes in your landscaping and laying a curved path to the front door would soften the facade. Although useful, screen doors on the front of a house just cover a blank canvas called your door, where you can really add some character and bring in color. The metal railing is dating the house and gives no curb appeal. Perhaps replace those with a painted wood railing that would flow into the columns to frame the porch area, which would brighten the whole exterior.

Sometimes I think I'd like to have a small overhang over my back doors

onto the deck. This would be useful if my dogs happen to be outside when it starts raining and I haven't noticed, so they're stuck outside. You'd think they'd get under the table, but they don't. They just stand at the door, getting wetter and wetter until I come let them inside. But my yard is very shady and inside this door is one of the brightest places in my house, so I don't want to obscure whatever sun might come into the kitchen with an overhang. I've seen that wavy clear ...»
plastic-looking stuff over some decks, but I think it's quite ugly so don't want to use it. Is there some kind of clear material I could use as a tiny roof for an overhang so I'll still get sunlight into the room? Here's where it would need to go.

Of course you could have a contractor come over and build you a portico which would be very nice but I'm thinking probably more than you are looking to spend. I'll just toss this out here for you, we could build a panel with a 1" X 1" frame and the clear glazing to any desired size, let's say 3' X 6' and you could simply attach it under your eave but you'd need to figure out the framework to support it. This would run you about $100.00 We build hundreds of these every year for people to enclose their porches and patios and you'd simply have one of these panels placed over the door for some weather protection. Just thought I'd toss this out there for you as an option. Eugene

  • Flagstone vs. designed concrete

Concrete vs. designed concrete vs. flagstone/pavers for my front walk?

I am looking for expert advice on what I should do to replace my front walkway. I love the look of flagstone and pavers but I am concerened of the cost involved(contracted) I dont want to do the boring basic concrete so was thinking designed concrete and I am concerned about it holding up in harsh Ohio winters? I need expert advice for this walway and steps. Dont look at the weed invested yard(being replaced) and the spotted house(being painted)

Painting: Painting Front Steps Made of Brick and Concrete

We have ugly front steps that are part brick and part concrete. I want to paint them one uniform color, so they don't look so disjointed. Can I use the same paint on both surfaces, or do I have to use different paint on brick than on concrete? Thank you!

you had a garage door and the colour of it if you have one. Personally, I am agreeing with those recommending black - or a slate grey - it would go well with your grey house and burgundy shutters.
