Cleaning & Organization: Cleaning hardwood floors

I have tried a Swiffer, a Bona, straight vinegar, orange cleaner, and a steam mop. I always get a residue on my hardwood floors. It is so bad that I'm actually considering Pergo or ...»
carpet! I'm tired of spending my money on products that do not work. Does anyone know definitively what cleans hardwood floors with no residue? I'm desperate!

It is confusing. There are so many different materials in new surfaces the way we use to clean ...»
has changed. Because what won't damage one will damage another one. My Mothers new floors are bamboo and they suggest warm water only. She used Bono and they streaked. Even through Bono states you can use them on Bamboo flooring. New windows especially by Pella you can't use alcohol or ammonia it has to be a window cleaner without either of these products in it because it will cause streaking and a film to build up. This is why I am grumpy about home made cleaning solutions. Some of them are very very good, most are damaging to your expensive surfaces. Since I am in the cleaning business and its my-livelihood I am always going to the manufactories specifications to find out how to clean a surface. I keep notebooks for each customer and business we service. I also keep one in my home for my surfaces.

Painting: Repainting wood floors on three season porch

I in the process of updating my three season porch. Step one is the floor. It is painted wood (at least two layers from what I can see) which I'd like to repaint. I've decided to use a floor and patio paint but have a few questions.

1.How do I need to prepare the floor before painting? It is an indoor porch (no water issues). Do I need to sand the entire thing or just the areas that are peeling. (It is in pretty good shape) ...»

2. From what I understand about floor and patin paint I don't need to prime the floor or apply a polyurethane coating after. Any experience with this?

Porcelain Floor tile

This tile job is part of a complete Condo renovation. The previous owner had carpet in the whole place, except for the kitchen and bath. ...»

Those area will get the same floor tile as well. One way to help with large rooms and the over all "pattern is to install some room "breaks" In this first pic this is the transition from the bedroom into the hallway. Switching to an "on point" install It is not necessary for the grout line to line up perfectly, the mosaic also helps break up the space.

this same mosaic will be used in the kitchen backsplash to bring in some room to room continuity.

  • The Beginning. Clean the concrete floor very well. Then paint the floor with 2 coats of Kilz water based sealer. Let it dry overnite. Next day streak entire floor with acrylic paint wood colors in one direction. I used bamboo tones. 1
  • Finished Floor. When paint streaks are dry, create the lines with a black permanent Sharpie pen that represent the boards. I did 6"x3' boards. stagger the boards approx 12" like wood floors. Darken a few boards for natural variation. 13
  • My Studio. When boards are to your liking and paint is dry, apply at least 4 coats of polyurethane over the entire floor. Let dry 3 days before putting furniture on it and 2 weeks before dragging across floor. Voila! You did it.

painting concrete floors

I had to pull the carpet up in one of my bedrooms and I didnt know what to put down on the bare concrete floor, so it stayed concrete for a while. I eventually decided to use the room as ...»
an art studio and wanted to have a wood floor in there. I decided to put my trompe l'oiel knowledge to work and paint the concrete floor in a bamboo style similar to my bamboo floor in my living room and I love the way it turned out. People have to look twice or be told its painted. a true trompe l'oiel effect.

  • We sanded the floor and applied a primer recommended by Sherwin Williams. 1

Flooring: floor transition after removing foyer wall

I'm removing a 10' wall in the entrance foyer dividing the dining room to open it up; both floors have the same atypical hardwood I wish to keep (various widths, unique pattern), but will ...»
be impossible to flow through after wall removed (wall was built then floors put down). Has anyone had any experience or ideas on how to handle? One consideration was putting up spindle railing with a walk-through and just put down a threshold, or put a single layer of tile, but thought I'd ask the group. Thanks ahead- Larry

Is this a T&G floor or more like a screwed down deck? T&G is often just set with small finish ...»
nails. at the tongue side...these do not have much holding power. When the floor is dry and flat a number of screws could be used the tighten up the whole floor. Some filler and paint and it will look like nothing is different.

  • Use a drill, hammer, and the Squeeeeek No More kit to fix creaks.
  • Find the joist direction by being like MacGyver. Investigate light fixtures and see how they're attached to the joist.
  • Use this joist finding tool that comes with the kit to locate joists under your carpet without ruining the carpet itself.
  • Find joists on opposite ends of your squeaky floor using a hammer and the joist finding tool in the floor repair kit. Then add yarn or string around the screws. This shows the joists.
  • Screws are aligned along a joist and pull the subfloor tight. This fixes squeaks.
  • Squeeeeek No More is the floor repair kit that made my wife a happy camper. No more squeaks in our carpeted floors :)
  • Use the tripod and special screws that come with the kit to fix squeaks.
  • Use the tripod to snap off the special screw heads.
  • The specials screws are scored and snap off below the subfloor.

Easily Fix Squeaky Carpeted Floors

If you have an older home then you know that squeaky carpeted floors are everywhere.

My wife requested that this pervasive problem be fixed and of course I know to listen ...»

(I'm only thick headed 77% of the time).

My brain seemed to remember seeing an episode of This Old House where they used a great little device to fix a second floor bedroom's squeaky floor.

After some research I found the floor repair kit and it's called Squeeeeek No More.

You can find it in most home centers for around $20 and the repair process is really easy.

The first step is to find the joist under your carpet. You can use a stud finder or tap a hammer over the carpet to find the joist.

The Squeeeeek No More kit also comes with a special joist finding tool that allows you to drill through your carpet without out ruining it.

Once all the joists are found in the area where you have your squeak you need to drill the special screws through the carpet & subfloor. This squeezes the subfloor against the joist and fixes the creaky sound.

For more information and a special surprise that you don't want to miss check out my blog post at http://www.homerepairtutor.com/fix-squeaky-f...

Hope this helps you with your home improvement adventures :)

    Thanks Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com ...»
    for the nice tip.

The drill bit that comes with the Squeeeeek No More kit is really fantastic for finding the joist. What you described is basically what they made. It has a long smooth section (3 inches) then 4 threads at the end that will catch the joist. The cool part is that if you hit a joist the drill will reverse itself.
