Crafts: slip covers for rectangular ottoman and love seat

Has anyone done slipcovers for ottomans and loveseats? Is there a tutorial out there? How to measure to make one from scratch? I sew quite a bit; but slipcovers elude me.

Painting: Has anyone tried Annie Sloan "chalk paint" for painting furniture?

It is $35 a quart so before making a purchase I would really like to hear from someone who has tried it.

DIY Projects: I really want an outdoor sofa, but they are sooo expensive.

I would like to build my own, any ideas on how to get started. I bought some high back chair cushions that I really like. I want it to be tall enough to lean back into. We watch tv on our deck.

Polly, I will be sure to post some photos of mine. I bought some gorgeous cushions at Kmart ...»
for 160.00 dollars and the material for the sofa cost me about 80.00. My son, is a carpenter, and he is gonna start working on it for me next week. He just became a Dad a few months ago, so it may take a couple of weeks for him to get it done, then I have to paint it! So excited to finally be getting a start on it! Photos to come!

I found an oval shaped wicker table in a thrift shop that was weathered really badly. The ...»
colors were a tan and blue, very faded. I paid about $5, spray painted it a high gloss black and it turned out so beautiful I have it in my living room for my coffee table. I put a beautiful gold and black tray(made in Italy) on top, also a thrift store find for $5 on 1/2 price day. It did take 3 coats of paint. I love it!!

Buying new closets - need advice

We're buying new closets for 2 kids rooms. I'm not sure whether to have them custom made or to buy ready-made from a furniture (or big box) store. ...»

Of course, custom made is more expensive, but there are a number of advantages:

1.maximizes space, both vertically and horizontally, since it's made exactly according to the wall size.

2.We can pick out the Formica, knobs, wood, pattern, etc. to suit our (my wife's) taste.

But... is it worth it?

Does anyone have advice for us? We'd like to make an educated decision.

Gonzales Rustic Furniture Find...but I Want It to Look Antique - Help!

I was lucky enough to find a set of 3 Gonzalez Rustic furniture pieces at auction for only $125! The coffee table alone sells for over $500 online. However, I don't like the natural pine ...»
finish, and want it to have a warm, worn antique look. I've never tried to stain something to look old before and need some advice on prep, colors/mixing of colors, and finish (wax/poly?) to achieve the look of the last picture. Is there a trick to getting the variation of colors within the stain, or will the knots, lines, etc., naturally do that?

Furniture: Drawer Pulls- 2.5"?? An endangered species..

Is it just me or are 2.5" pulls impossible to find? I've been to all my local hardware stores (Lowes/Home Depot included) and the only option they had in 2.5" were the 'cup' pulls. I want something really unique for a piece I'm working on and need to replace the hardware. I really don't want to putty in the existing holes and drill new ones! HELP! Anyone found some neat ones?! Where?!

  • How can I restore this wrought iron bed frame without losing all of the patina?

Restoring A Wrought Iron Bed

I bought this this head board/foot end at a yard sale that was used outdoors and is very rusty. I don't want it perfectly painted or sandblasted and want to keep the patina but not quite as rusty-looking as I'll be using it indoors as a bed again. Suggestions, please!

How can I Fix up this piece of furniture?

We've had this cubbie unit (bought at target 5 years ago) in my daughters room and the top started peeling away some time ago. I'm pretty sure it started after water spilled and it wasn't ...»
wiped up right away. I'd really like to fix it up and have no clue how! There are so many amazing furniture revivals on Hometalk so I hope all you revival experts can give me some direction and advice! I'm not looking to do a major revival, I'm more interested in fixing the peeling top and shelves. Thanks

You could look into using a piece of stick on laminate that you can buy at Home Depot or a ...»
similar store. I know it comes in different widths, not sure if it would be big enough for your project. Otherwise, I would buy a new laminate board and put it over the top of the cabinet. If it's the same color no one would ever know it wasn't supposed to be there.
