Gardening: Hydrangeas

I bought a root bound hydrangea(sp?) but there were new leaves at the bottom. The three heads are dying. Should I snip the heads off to give more nutrients to the plant?

I have gotten into these beauties. I have always shied away from them because we face due ...»
west. But now I plant them near the water supply so we can keep them watered. I laid limbs down on the ground and put a shovel of dirt on it between the base and end of limb after it quit blooming. They all rooted and I have 4 new baby ones now. I have a new variagated on called "lace cap" that I am going to try and root this year after it blooms. Will keep you posted on this.

Gardening: Best LOW-LIGHT indoor plants??

I need some suggestions regarding some larger low-light indoor plants. I seem to be able to find plenty of indoor plants that require a good bit of light, but not very many low-light. So far, I have only purchased a Chinese Evergreen. Which ones have you all had the best luck with/your favorites etc? Thanks ahead of time!

chinese evergreens (aglaonema), janet craigs, warneckiis, dracaena marginatas, cordatums, ...»
sanseveria, canela, bamboo palms, natal mahogany, many of the philodendron family, dracaena limelight, corn canes (dracaena massengea), kentia palm, homalomena, spathiphyllum (peace lily), neanthe bella palm, cataractarum palm, rhaphis palm, this is all I can think of at the moment if I remember more I will post again but also low light plants differ depending on the area you are in you post states N.C. so these should all work well what most people do not know is that just as outdoor plant needs change with zone you are in so do tropicals like a nice lowlight plant in florida is a high light plant in north dakota and few books tend to identify this as the people writing them do so for the area they live in. sorry to spout but as a horticulturist this is very frustrating to me as for people to be successful they need all the information they can get same for watering needs most houseplants do not need to be watered once a week unless you are in a VERY dry area each plant needs watering when it wants water this is judged by how dry the siol is and how deep in the pot it is dry drying is as important to you plants as watering is because plants have oxygen needs and they only get this from drying out some if you have any other questions when you get you specific plants feel free to message me on facebook

Gardening: Garden Box

I have a large garden box to fill with good soil. What would be an inexpensive filler to put down first and then add soil. Would clean coastal hay be a good idea?
