Gardening: Plant advice for sloping yard

Hi Everyone, I'm looking for suggestions on plantings for a new old garden bed. Here's the issue: we live in NW Illinois, zone 5, heavy clay, full sun, cold winters. Our backyard was ...»
basically a sloping meadow that now has grass and a planting bed I dug in two years ago. The water seems to run off the top of the meadow straight into the bed washing away the soil and mulch I've put around bushes & perennials. So far I've lost three weigelas, an elderberry and various grasses and coneflowers. Any suggestions on plants and/or ways to absorb the water (it gushes because the soil is such heavy clay it justs runs across the top). Oh, and if the water or weather doesn't kill the plant the deer &rabbits might munch it so keep that in mind.

Gardening: Gardening Table

I want a cheap gardening table to use to pot plants, wash veggies, ect. . It has to be able to be left outside in the yard because I do not have a shed. Any ideas?

Gardening: Just bought a passion plant. Never saw one before.

What is the best way to care for it, says you can bring it in during the winter months. Right now in a transportable pot, any suggestions?

  • There's only one flower spike in about five iris plants in my garden.
  • It's gorgeous, but lonely
  • Love the colour variations between the upper and lower petals. Plus the nectar stripes are so pretty.

Gardening: One Lonely Iris

Last year, I planted a number of iris cuttings from a friend. The only one to bloom has just opened. They are in full sun and I planted them shallow as I've done before successfully. What could be wrong?

From the wife of a chicken farmer who also grew row crops for 10 years, the weeds don't come ...»
from the chicken fertilizer. They are dormant in the soil and the fertilizer "wakes" them up. Yum, yum good stuff. : )

Here's more info on the variety you have: Epimedium x perralchicum'Fröhnleiten' ...»

One of the great workhorses for the garden, this old cultivar is still at the top of its class. The rich, dark-green, glossy foliage is fully evergreen. Cut the leaves to the ground in mid-winter to make room for the brilliant canary-yellow flowers. When it is finished blooming red stained leaves unfurl, highlighted with chartreuse-green veins. This is one of the best epimedium for use as a ground cover. Once established, few weeds can push their way through the dense root system and thick foliage cover.

Gardening: Ants on My Prickly Pear!

A friend noticed some tiny (sugar) ants on my Prickly Pear then told me they would kill it. They are not easy to grow here and I really don't want to loose it. At this time it also has ...»

I wonder if spraying vinegar would work to kill the ants. Vinegar has many uses. ...»

PS - I grew up in Europe eating prickly pears and bread for breakfast or dessert after dinner. Where can I find a plant here? I would like to plant one near my house in Central Georgia.
