Gardening: Planting corn?

I'm looking for advice about growing corn. I'd like to plant some in my backyard, but I have a lot of questions. Does corn need a lot of sun? What type of soil is good for growing corn? Does it require a lot of water? Also, when is the best time to plant? Spring or fall?

Natural fertilizer is great...but be careful. "Organic" is a buzz word, but is a concept most ...»
people know nothing about how to go about using. Having been raised in the country, I know you have to know that "raw manure" can be dangerous. Research how to cure manure in the sun before using it in a garden. Be careful...a lot of things that are "natural" will kill you! Till your soil, make your rows and use a hoe handle to poke holes to drop the seed in. In my other life as a kid, my family over the years planted acres and acres of corn and all sorts of veggies. Mom's "garden" grew larger as her children grew larger...but boy, did we eat some good stuff!

Gardening: Please name this plant

This plant sheds its leaves in winter and in May bears new leaves then buds then these white flowers with yellow centers. It is a perennial and very hardy. This shrub is very old and does not need pruning.

Plants bloom. This is when rhubarb blooms. Simple as that. It is not stress or anything else. ...»
Tulips bloom in the spring and so does rhubarb. Cut off the flower/seed stalk where it emerges and the attached leaves (these stalks on the flower stalk are edible) or all energy will go to what the plant was meant to do, reproduce, and we want it to only produce stalks and leaves.

May Garden ~ Birdhouses & Flowers

In looking around the garden, I see a theme has developed. It's all about the birds and flowers. With approximately one hundred birdhouses, I suppose my collection is now nearing ...»
intervention status! Some are decorative and some are functional with clean-outs, but long ago I found out the birds are the ones who decide which is which. A bossy little house wren has commandeered the gazebo garden where she and her hubby have taken up residence in a blue bird house, chasing any other birds who dare to come near.

Every new flower is an awaiting surprise and , as I stroll our garden, bird song greets me. A red fox streaked across the front lawn this early morning, probably from the cat food on our porch. We've had lovely rains and everything is an intense shade of spring green.

Compost Bin/tiller

Got this used Mantis tiller at a yard sale for $15 recently. All it needed was a carburetor, which my husband stole off the gas blower. I took it to the compost bin, reducing it down to a ...»
manageable level. I can never get the compost to turn over with just a pitchfork, it is too heavy. I will admit, it was a mess, the tiller kept getting full and I had to keep the tines clean. But I am glad it did the job. BTW, this little baby is powerful in the veggie garden, too! I think it will outperform the medium & large tillers we have.

Maintenance Free Shrubs

I once saw some plywood shrubs made for a stage play. I thought that would be pretty neat for me to have in the front of my house and it would give me way more room for the flowers I love ...»
to plant every summer. SO - My nephew cut out shapes of shrubs out of plywood and I painted them. Here they are! It's a fairytale look, don't you think?
