Gardening: Weed?

I have this coming up all through my flowerbed. Can anyone tell me what it is? I can't find anything online that even looks remotely close. I live in the West Central part of Oklahoma if that means anything...

Gail, after reading your reply, I went outside to "smell" the "alien plant" and it just smells ...»
like if you would tear grass and smell it. It just smells like cut grass. No onion smell. It's really light and airy....I'm not totally convinced that it's "nutgrass" (sry Nancy) because it just doesn't look like any of the images I have viewed. I'm just gonna let it grow and see what it does. Everything needs a chance at life and I'm gonna wait this one out. Thanks for replying! :-)

  • There's only one flower spike in about five iris plants in my garden.
  • It's gorgeous, but lonely
  • Love the colour variations between the upper and lower petals. Plus the nectar stripes are so pretty.

Gardening: One Lonely Iris

Last year, I planted a number of iris cuttings from a friend. The only one to bloom has just opened. They are in full sun and I planted them shallow as I've done before successfully. What could be wrong?

A bad smell basically comes from too much green (likely the ammonia smell is from too many ...»
grass clippings and not enough browns to balance it); not enough air or too wet. As Sia says, making compost is fairly straight forward but it's a bit like baking a cake - you need a balance of moist green fresh ingredients (which contain nitrogen - like your food scraps, grass clippings and manure) and brown dry ingredients (which contain carbon) - about 2 parts brown (such as dead leaves, dry grass clippings, hay etc) to 1 part green. You also need to get air into the mix so the right kind of microorganisms can go to work and it doesn't become anaerobic and smell and sufficient moisture for them to go to work and break it down. You can do this by adding both coarse and fine materials, watering them in as you go and turning regularly to aerate. Always finish with a brown carbon layer (this stops rodents and flies etc tucking into your food scraps) too! Hope this helps.

Gardening: Do the herbs keep their flavor when dried this way?

I usually dry herbs by hanging them on a drying rack in my kitchen and they retain their flavor very well. Do micro-dried herbs also maintain their flavor?
