Compost Bin/tiller

Got this used Mantis tiller at a yard sale for $15 recently. All it needed was a carburetor, which my husband stole off the gas blower. I took it to the compost bin, reducing it down to a ...»
manageable level. I can never get the compost to turn over with just a pitchfork, it is too heavy. I will admit, it was a mess, the tiller kept getting full and I had to keep the tines clean. But I am glad it did the job. BTW, this little baby is powerful in the veggie garden, too! I think it will outperform the medium & large tillers we have.

  • Turning on the water. We are storing the rain water that is coming from off the roof and out the gutter in one of our rain barrels. It is supposed to be much better than hose water for the plants.
  • Watering the garden plants. Tomatoes, peppers and herbs. We connected a hose to our rain barrel and ran the hose out to the garden. It worked great for water pressure since the garden is downhill from the rain barrel.

DIY Raised Garden [part 2]

We went ahead and planted some veggies the other day. We planted cherry tomatoes, "Mr. Stripey" heirloom tomatoes, giant marconi peppers, bell peppers, JalapeƱos, banana peppers , and ...»
also cilantro, sage, basil and thyme.

These were already started plants. We also picked out a bunch of plants that we can start from seeds that we are thinking about planting soon. Hopefully its not too late!

  • This is what we started with - just an area in the yard with a black municipal composting bin.
  • You'll need five pallets to get a two tiered system. Start by creating a back wall and securing another pallet for a side wall.
  • Use long deck screws to attach the pallets top, middle and bottom of each side.
  • A two bin system allows for piling kitchen and yard waste on one side to decompose and storing the finished compost on the other side. 1

How to Build a Composting System from Pallets

After seeing countless photos of these systems on Pinterest and in the blogosphere, we finally got around to making our own composting system from pallets this weekend. It's really quick and easy - here's how we did it in less than an hour.

Mulch piles doing all the work for me.

I continue your read all your posts about gardening with wood chips. I am grateful to have such a wealth of knowledge and experience, shared on HomeTalk. I have plenty of room and time to ...»
let the woodchips turn themselves into composted mulch. I am going to pick a spot this spring, were I have hard clay soil and weeds, and cover it with 8 inches of wood chips. Then I will leave for 1 year, and monitor and document its progress, for weeds, and soil conditioning. I want to see if it can transform soil composition.

I have down slowed down a bit with an old back injury, but I plan to begin using my wood chips ...»
this month. First I am going to map out a small area and get soil samples, and monitor the soil change that take place over time, without any other supplements. Second I am applying wood chips around some of my veggie plants; I have planted in my row garden, and compare them to other plants in the same row. Due to physical limitations, I had to reduce my standard 12 rows down to only 3; 125 foot rows. And if I am able I will seal my 2x12x12 boards and build 2 each 4x12 raised beds, with a soil mixture of potting soil, peat moss, vermiculite, and AZOMITE.

P.S. I am having trouble getting photos from my phone to upload, but I will get it worked out.

Installing a (Manufactured) Rain Harvesting Barrel

I installed half round gutters and corrugated downspouts on my house recently ... (I have an old house and I wanted to maintain this look). As I was doing this, and since I knew I had ...»
some nearby yard work planned, I incorporated a rain barrel.

After some research (through which I learned there is no shortage of techniques for making rain barrels nor in the shear number of rain barrels now on the market), I chose a 60 gallon rain barrel made by a company called EarthMinded. I picked it because 1) it looked good 2) it was comparatively large 3) it looked easy to install and 4) it could be bought through a local conservancy that subsidized the barrels bringing their cost down.

With rain barrels (like real estate) location location location is everything. Screened (at least partially) from the road, I set the barrel just downhill of last year's Vinca planting and just uphill from a bit of grass I intended to overseed (I completed this this past weekend and plan to post on it). I purchased 2 bags of pea gravel, used scrap (ground-contact-rated) 4x4s (further treated) and a spare piece of blue stone. Together, this/these provided a solid, level and elevated base (all very important).

Assembling and installing the barrel was a snap (Earthminded's instructions were excellent) BUT I did have to request beforehand a kit that would work with my new round downspouts.

I may write more about this project on my blog in the coming weeks but for now if you have questions, don't be afraid to ping me. Thanks for reading. ~jb
