Home Maintenance & Repairs: Constant dust in the house, and I know it is comeing from forced hot air vent and the AC. How would one go about trying

to get rid of it and a financial leash? I do change the filter's regulary, but would it be worth attempting to save the money to have duct work properly cleaned out? Or should I just ...»
always carry a dust rag and wipe things down a couple times a week, which doesn't really bother me either?

Something I forgot to mention is that dust is 70% dead skin cells. If you have a pet then you ...»
    will be adding to that.

If you are looking for drafts just get a stick of incense, light it then move around your house testing outlets, light switches, windows and doors.

  • Wall mount Fireplace 1

Does anyone have one of these?

I am looking into maybe buying a wall mount fireplace, but i wanted to see if anyone else had one, and how well they work. We have baseboard heating now, but as we all know, it gets very expensive to turn on, and it kicks up all the dust on the floor...

here to Yakima, "The Palm Springs of Washington" because the "weather here is sooo nice" Well compared to many places I suppose it is.But it is still cold and gray, and summers are so hot. Maybe they are talking about we only get a few inches of snow once in a while. Well, to me cold is cold, at least snow is white and bright, which lifts my spirits.I have never been to NMex...and have only flown into Denver a couple of times. Told hubs recently we ought to fly to Denver or Salt Lake just because......somewhere different! We are already cold in our dbl mhome...it is a 76, we got new windows a few years ago, but they really only made it quieter from street noise, there are probably soo many leaky places in this metal shell, we get so frustrated. I have to hold hubs back from getting a house. He is 65, ready to retire pretty soon, not take a mortgage on. Anyway, i like the radiant heater over our fakey fireplace. Hopefullysomeday retiring in Ensenada! hah

Double Glazed Interior Storm Windows

We manufacture double glazed interior windows at our facilities in S.W. Wisconsin. These interior storm windows are constructed using an attractive aluminum frame which is powder coated ...»
and painted (3 color options) and this material is 15/16" X 3/8" roll formed .032 aluminum. We use steel corners, not plastic, and these corners are invisible to you as we miter the frames. The glazing film is a very special German film which is 4.3 Mil. thick, crystal clear, UV stabilized, -33 degree and distortion free. Around the entire outer perimeter of the frame we attach a high quality foam weather stripping which will collapse when you install your interior storm window, as it collapses it forms a perfect air seal and also holds the window securely in place even if it is an overhead skylight. We have designed these to last you for decades and thanks to the double glazing your existing windows will immediately become near Energy Star efficient. The double glazing is the secret to the energy efficiency, you are creating two new dead air pockets with our windows, one from your window to the the interior storm window and then the window itself has a 3/8" dead air space built into it between the two layers of glazing film. These two dead air spaces are super insulators and in the world of energy efficiency when it comes to windows one layer of glazing only stops a draft....... two layers of film will insulate, inhibit condensation, stop drafts, cold areas in rooms near windows and address heat loss or gain. We can build almost every size and shape. 563-542-2134

you could start by visiting a wood stove / fireplace specialty shop. Take a look at the models of inserts they have. Most of these places have sales people that are informed enough to give you the specifics of a retrofit.

Personally I'm a big fan of real wood stoves. I have a free standing soapstone unit in my master bedroom and a large "insert" in our living room. We use these as supplemental to our forced air propane furnace. We keep the furnace thermostat set pretty low (58 to 60) and when we want more heat we fire up the wood stove. In and average year I will burn about 5 cords of wood.

We love wood because of the environmental aspects...wood burning is "carbon neutral" and we are not adding to the greenhouse gas issue. Plus the scent of a real wood fire is pretty cool.

I have know of folks upgrading a standard fireplace to an insert or free standing stove. as these are more heat efficient than a basic fireplace. In our small cabin our tiny wood stove is the ONLY heat source and just a couple of splits can heat the whole place easily.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: thermostats..advice

We have a very old thermostat, I just checked HD because their e-ad had them "on sale"..how would I ever begin to know what to get? There must be 40 to select from. We have an old round ...»
one, which I think is very touchy because it goes and goes then stops and shortly kicks in again. And setting a degree is like the lotto.

We have an old dbl wide mobile home elec furnace with central Air. Also are they hard to install or do we need someone to install it?

Thanks....

    KMS Woodworks kevin..we did have a ...»
pellet stove, both here and in our former house. We found the heat did not go down the hallway into the bedrooms. After a few years we removed it. It got too hot in the living room , and stayed cold in the bedrooms etc.I had to use a fan in the hallway which didnt take care of the probem. And the cost of pellets runs the same as our electricity ..really!
