  • I think it should be law that every home has a front porch. Alongside tall pillars and flowers, there's no more welcome sight!
  • Quirky details make the grade here. LOVE the sign!
  • Why don't they make covered bridges any longer? So beautiful! I wonder if there's an actual reason this use to be done?
  • These fences are built with no tools nor holes. They are scattered around Gettysburg and were used in the battlefields so the farmers could move them around. I ADORE this look and hope to emulate it somehow. Maybe around the garden...
  • Loving this grouping of trees in pots... who says a patio can't be lush and amazing?
  • An old train station wears cheerful, complimentary colours in Gettysburg. Note flowers aren't even missed when the building takes centre stage? It's beautiful!

  • This is the entrance into my backyard (from the backyard looking out) Excuse the mess, it's a work in progress. The 2 plants that flank the gate are new rose bushes. They shouldn't bloom for a few more years. Photo prior to sundown
  • Showing more of the fence line to show the slope of the yard. Eventually the entire fence line will have plantings. I just started on the other side of the yard and am making my way around
  • Again excuse the mess, from the gate looking into the backyard. The set of chairs are under a tree that starts to be shaded around noon. Will eventually be adding to that as well.

Sloped Backyard

I need ideas on how to make a nice path from the gate down into my backyard. As you can tell by this photo it slopes significantly as does the rest of my backyard. Please excuse the mess ...»
but I am "spring cleaning" and I do have plans to do something with that pallet, don't worry :) I am wanting a path roughly the size of the gate door (about 4 ft) and 24-28 ft long, it will gradually turn towards where the stack of chairs are. There I will need to build a small retaining wall I know but for now I just desperately need to address this entryway. I am unfortunately unable to rent heavy machinery or spend very much money so it will have to be done mostly with good old fashioned elbow grease (and I'm sure a little blood, a lot of sweat and hopefully just a few tears) Any and all ideas and advice are greatly appreciated! Help!!!

  • Red, white and blue star luminary made with a mason jar.
  • I used a quart sized mason jar with star stickers and acrylic paints. I used the tape to separate the 3 sections to paint. Applied the stars around the area and then painted the jar.
  • Red paint first. It took several coats to get coverage. I used the acrylic paint for the brushed look and transparency.
  • I turned the jar over and painted the blue. After the red and blue dried I removed the stickers and prepared the middle section for the white paint.
  • I applied the stickers to the middle section and painted over the section with the white paint. Now all I had to do was let it dry completely. I placed the candle inside and it is ready to light.

Patriotic Mason Jar Luminary

Just a little something to use when we are gathered to celebrate Memorial Day. I made several of these to put on our deck.

Spring Foam on the Pond Surface? No Worries, Its Just Fish Spawning!

During this time of the year, Turpin Landscaping receives many phone calls asking about the foam on the surface of their ponds and why their fish are overly active. Assuming that others ...»
had the same questions, I thought it would be nice to take a few lines to address what pond owners are seeing.

Fish reproduce through a method called spawning. Different fish will spawn using different methods but the simple overview is that the female fish will release her eggs into the water while the male fish will release their sperm into the water. This sperm is what causes the foam and sheen on the surface of the water. The extra energy you are seeing from your fish is caused by the male fish knocking the eggs from the female fish. They will use their tails to hit the females against the sides of the pond to knock their eggs loose.

The behavior you see is perfectly natural and you do not need to change any of your pond care habits to accommodate for this behavior. Additionally, if you do not see baby fish, this is also natural. Fish will eat the eggs of others so it is rare for fish to reach adulthood. The most important thing to remember is this is a natural process and your pond will clear shortly without any interference!

Transplanted Perennials From Old Home to New Yard - Weed Control

In November of 2012 I planted bulbs to start - sorry no pics from the results. Actually move in started gardens at the base of front trees, the side of the garage and driveway. I love ...»
perrenials because; they spread, propogate themselves, eventually growd out weeds, (at least til the fall), add color, texture, interest to our otherwise flat nad boring landscape. Already, neighbors stop to chat and make comments on how nice things look. I just smale and say - wait 'til next year.

  • This photo shows the house before it was painted and the lawn before we started building the patio. It was UGLY.
  • After some good teamwork between my husband and me, this is our finished product. We spend lots of time out here.

We Built Our Patio
