  • Good job I can see past the facade and find the diamond in the rough!!! That's me standing by my new studio and loving it. I saw the possibilities as I checked the whole thing out. It needed just a little work ...I thought!!
  • We added 2 windows in the front and 2 new ones on the side . we closed up a back window because it faced south and I chose to have north facing window for better light control. And we opened the existing doorway for the french doors.
  • At the end of last season ( our seasons run november through may with none or not so much rain) this is where we had to stop as the rains came and we couldnt get out to do anymore
  • So this is where we are today. follow me for updates as there is more work to be done.

Follow Me as I Build My Art Studio From an Old Construction Trailer

My husband and I love to build and create. I always wanted an outdoor studio especially for my art. I've always shared my artspace with bedrooms, living rooms, spare rooms, basements and ...»
now lanais. My art supplies usually get scattered all over the house. Well, my husband suprised me one day last year and found a construction trailer a friend of ours was getting rid of and brought it home.

He said " Here you go honey...your new studio!!"

  • Power washing a deck or porch can completely revive an existing structure.
  • Painting rails and columns might be another way to revitalize a deck or porch.
  • Sometimes replacing only some of the surfaces is needed. These stairs have been resurfaced with tiles on a wood structure using a special system.
  • This deck was made to look completely different by using bricks instead of wood. It gives the space a whole new feeling.
  • This cutaway shows how an existing deck or porch can be fitted with stone, tile or brick.
  • Landscaping helps renew an area and blend better into the surrounding yard.

DIY Ideas for Renovating a Deck or Porch

Are you looking to renovate a deck or porch soon to be able to enjoy the summer season? Or maybe you have a new building project in the pipeline. Here are a few of our favorite DIY ideas ...»
for renovating, building, or refurbishing outdoor areas:

1. Power wash the existing deck and railings. You might be surprised at how it looks and you may decide you don't even need to do further renovations!

2. Paint wood or metal floors, railings, and ceilings. Sometimes that crisp new-paint look makes everything okay again.

3. Replace only the part that needs replacing - select rotted boards, remove, and then replace with new before re-staining or painting.

4. If a deck or porch floor has to be totally replaced, think about other options to change the look of your space either with interlocking tiles or an innovative system that allows you to use stone, tile or brick on your deck or porch foundation (shown in the photos below).

5. Lastly, don't forget the power of landscaping for your deck or porch! A little greenery and color goes a long way to creating an outdoor oasis.

  • Here's what we're working toward. Think it will be ready in time for summer?
{fingers crossed}
  • They dug the hole Week 1. And then they put in they "framed it out" in wood which is what you see here...
  • and here.
  • The next day the steel re-bar went in.
  • Then they put plastic all around it to get ready for the cement shell.
  • "Shooting the shell" was a busy day. 3 truck loads of "shot-crete" went into the big hole in our backyard.
  • And by the end of week 2 we could actually start to tell we were actually getting a pool.

Week 2 of Counting Down to a Backyard Escape

Dirt's been flying, large equipment is coming and going. Plenty of excitement around as we're counting down to a backyard escape. It's week 2 of building a pool so let's take a look to ...»
see what progress has been made.

This is week 2 in a series, "What's it like to build a pool?" It is not sponsored by any pool company. It's simply my personal account of the the good, the bad and whatever that happens as we try to have a pool by summer.

New Trellis Made Out of an Old Gazebo.

We had an old gazebo, we took it apart and my significant other welded it together to make a trellis. Some spray paint. The lantern is an old one that was in the garage, painted it, added a solar light and used a pint mason jar for the glass. This was put around the raised beds I made last year. It will be full of perennials eventually.
