Painting: I knew I should have taken a different route home.

But, I didn't. I drove right past the vintage shop and turned around and yes, I went in the shop. Lo and behold, this is what I walked out with. Never mind that I haven't even started on ...»
the vintage chaise or the wonderful crate! But tell me, would you have left this in the store? Now comes the question.....do I leave it as is or shall I paint? I'm thinking I'll use in the lanai. It's a pretty sturdy piece and vintage for sure. I would say 40s or 50s. I think it looks good as is, but wanted to get some opinions. Thanks.

Joan Berrios, that parasol is a real beauty. Unless you have a large space I'm guessing you ...»
won't be able to leave it open. I've seen them suspended from a ceiling (a high one) and I don't think you should take it apart. However, I do like the look of it sort of open. I would be beautiful in an Asian style, or a tall black pot. You could prop it somehow to stand upright and give it a special space in your home. I really love it....and yes, I would have bought that baby!!

Painting: Has anyone tried Annie Sloan "chalk paint" for painting furniture?

It is $35 a quart so before making a purchase I would really like to hear from someone who has tried it.

Can someone tell me the paint that glows in the dark on your planters?

It's a spray paint, it was on a post not long ago and now I can't find it. Thank you in advance.

  • my pink & black bathroom. ugh, help!

Painting: Can I paint over bathroom tile and have it look good?

My 2 bathrooms are horrendous. One is black & pink the other has issues all its own.

I'd love to paint the pink & black bathroom as a cheaper option while I renovate the other. Is it going to look terrible or can it really be a project worth getting into??

Painting: Painting ceramic tile?

My entry way is a very smooth polished looking ceramic tile. I am wondering if there is a way to paint it instead of replace it to save money.

Leslie, Rustoleum Tile Transformation is one the few ways to DIY. I have been researching this ...»
same topic for several weeks as I am desperate to change the color of our recently tiled bathroom shower walls. There are professionals that say they can do this but it costs more than I can afford. The Rustoleum product isn't cheap but cheaper than the professionals. There is another product that is way cheaper but the reviews say it doesn't hold up to a lot of water use or heavy traffic. Good luck. If you find a great product, I would love to know.

I go through the same dilemma and opposing opinions in my house. I have an ecletic mix of ...»
contemporary, coastal and antiques decor... So, I go by a 'guide of sorts'...

If it's something from my husband's family, passed down...then we don't paint it...i.e. hall tree & a secretary similar to yours. :)

If it's mine, I struggle... I have an early 1900's mahogany vanity/desk that has the prettiest natural patina, I just can't put a paint brush to it.. Same thing for my antique radio from the 30's. Some times, the nostalgia and the pretty, natural patina just should not be touched...It does bring down the value, IF you were to ever sell the piece. You cannot undo it, once it's painted over the patina.

But, I have a c.1920-30's waterfall art deco vanity with mirror and I'm in the process of painting it!! It's going to be BEAUTIFUL and I'll love it even MORE!

Also, I have found cool antique & vintage items that were inexpensive and even had some minor damage...I painted them!! Like a Dillingham cedar chest... Painted antique white, distressed w/a sand dollar painted on the front... I looks BETTER than the dark stain it was previously stained with. Whatever you decide, is your business... I just shared how I gage some of the pieces I paint or not. :)

Painting: how to paint staircase wall without a scaffold

I can't afford to hire a professional and I'm afraid to rig up a scaffold...is there any way to cut-in the top of a staircase wall? I thought of duck-taping a stiff brush to a pole, but ...»
not sure if it would work. Guess I could paint the ceiling the same color if I have to, but prefer not. Any suggestions?
