Outdoor Living: If I build it, will they come?

(I hope this isn't a duplicate. My initial post froze or something) Anyway, I've got mosquitoes galore in my tree-filled yard. They are eating very well off me, my kids and dogs! I've ...»
been doing some reading on mosquito control and am seriously looking at a bat house. My question is ... if I haven't really seen many bats around, if I build a bat house, how do I attract the bats to it?

Has anyone done this before and had success?

What is a good natural plant or repellent to keep the deer out of my sedum and hostas???

I used Irish Spring for years, but they must now be immune to it. ( and no, I am not going to pee on the perimeter.) I bought a harmless repellent at Lowes. Seems to work, but it is expensive and needs reapplying. Maxi's Taxi

Gardening: Why are ants depositing dirt around the top of my Ranunculus?

This is my first year to plant Ranunculus bulbs. I have them in half barrels on our deck. It seems ants are depositing dirt all around the top of the stems. I have used an insecticidal soap on it to no avail...any suggestions?

Yes, you do not want to risk getting the chemicals on the feeders as it may discourage the ...»
    birds from feeding there again.

Try the traps. Your fighting a up hill battle in a rain storm trying to keep the wasps away. Unless you can find their nests, which are very difficult as they can be quite far away. They will simply keep coming back. Might as well catch them in the act.

Are any of the animal pest repellents effective against squirrels, deer, and other animal pests in home gardens?

Advertisements on radio and in print publications suggest that some animal repellents are effective "up to 30 days" or more. Any suggestions as to when they are or are not effective?

Scent-based repellents will work for awhile on deer, if they are not too hungry. But you need ...»
to keep changing the product you use so they do not get used to the scent.

Gardening: Where can one find Sevin dust, an insecticide that can be used on most vegetables?

I cannot find a bag of dust that can be used to fill my hand-operated duster. All I can find is a small sprinkle container, which is not practical where a significant number

of plants need dusting.

Gardening: I have old stockade posts - Any suggestions on how & what to use to seal them against dry rot and termites?

I want to use as retainers for a garden I've been creating against my stock aid fence. It has a slight slope and the plants could used better soil.

Critters in the Garden

I have creatures (chipmunks or squirrels) digging in my small garden. Does anyone know of cheap or no-cost ways of keeping these critters out of my garden.

Gardening: do I fertilize first or spray for insects

I have a vegetable garden that is doing amazing, its growing crazy, maybe because of the compost. I see a lot of tomatoes, 2 were red and rotten, lots of green ones, the cucumber is all over the place but still don't see cucumber, a few watermelon and cantelope growing and a couple of peppers are doing great. But I am concerned that I have an insect problem and I haven't fertilize, I am surprised no cucumbers since last year I had lots. My question is do I fertilize first or spray insecticide first, details pls. thank you.

Donna's exactly right. The first blooms on a cucumber are all male, and will fall off the ...»
plant without producing fruit. When female blooms start appearing, bees will carry pollen from the male blooms to the female blooms and you'll end up with cucumbers. So make sure you're not spraying anything that will harm bees.

  • The window, sill and apron before we made any changes [aside from the painting]. :)
  • Exterior of the house, window in question...
  • This is the side of the window that shows the largest concentration of the "blue stuff" mostly in the corner [not seen in this shot], but is even visible to the edge of the sill.
  • Another view of the left corner.
  • View on the left side of the window of the piece that is broken [prevents the window from staying up without being propped - newer version of a sash weight?].

You can see it is out of its track or case and leaning out toward the right
  • Another view of this same piece that is broken.
  • We have noticed this blue fluff on the latch and above.
  • You can see whatever this stuff is, how it collects in drifts on the inside. We have not seen this stuff on the outside of the windows.

What is this mysterious blue powder that keeps collecting on the inside of our window and sill?

Our home was built in 1989 and all of the windows are original. We purchased the house in 2010 and it had the original builder grade trim on all the windows and sills. This window was a ...»
little cruddy on the inside when we bought the house, but we chalked it up to the fact that the house sat vacant for several months after foreclosure. But we had the trim replaced and it is a custom made casement. We're stumped as to the source and the identity of this mysterious blue powder. We've simply been vacuuming it up and wiping the window to remove it periodically.
