Remodeling: Need someone to build this!

The previous owners made a stupid box looking fireplace. I want to upgrade! Please see the pics and let me know if this is work you can do. I'm getting quotes together and would like it done ASAP if possible. I live in McDonough, Ga.

Remodeling: Miracle Method Bathtub Refinishing

Has anyone ever used this company before, or know of anyone who has used it? Does it work, and hold up well? Anyone in the Katy/Houston area in particular? Any and all comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Kathy...If I remember right the tub refinish was in the neighbor hood of 600-700. In the case ...»
AI had done the tub was an older cast iron beast that would have cost about a 1000 to replace. (that is just the tub price. Getting the old one out and a new one in would have been another grand as well...so yes it is cheap that a swap and the homeowners we super happy with the results. I had this done about 6-7 years ago and have not heard a single bad thing from them.

Remodeling: Cobb county residentual permits and inspections

I purchased a home with an unfinished basement. It has framing/installation/some electrical and roughed in plumbing. So I spoke with an Licensed electrician about wiring it out to code ...»
and him pulling a permit. He advised me if he pulled the permit it would have to be for the full job not just electric so it would be better if I pulled an home owners inspection permit because I'm doing the basement in stages. I called and requested this and I was told it was 71.50 a sq ft and 4.50 per something else. Well I have 1200 Sqt so just adding that together that tells me that can't be right as that is about 85,000 bucks. I question why it would be so much to to finish my basement and was told thats the system and they hung up on me. I called back and got someone else and rephased the question still to get told they needed to know the full amount I was going to spend to finish the basement.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Permits! UGH! But keep in mind that you do not just get a permit--you have to get it signed ...»
off on, or you may run into trouble down the road trying to sell the house. And if you put in something that is not legal, i.e., a staircase to steep and not to code, that will haunt you! It is best to play by the rules. But you can use some reclaimed materials that can keep your cost down. You certainly do not want to put in extra fancy stuff and then not expect your assessment to go way up! TIP: For all DIY projects, know that we have "Habitat for the Humanities Resell" stores in the Atlanta area. Worth checking them out!

Remodeling: Any ideas on how to transform a large utility shed into a "cute house?

I purchased a large 12'X16' utility shed to fix the inside up as an office. The interior is very cute and welcoming, but the outside is an eyesore in my backyard. We've thought of ...»
building a porch on it and painting the front door a pretty color, but? The porch idea would be the width of the building 12' and 4' out. I thought of columns but that is as far as I have gotten. Help please from you wonderful creative people. I will try and get a picture in a day or two.

Remodeling: 1970's Birch Kitchen cabinet refinish. HELP!

Hi! I'm am in the process of refinishing Birch veneered kitchen cabinets. They were installed, brand new around 1972. The cabinets were shellacked over the existing hardware and have been ...»
a nightmare to clean and sand. I tried using Tung Oil to finish them, because my husband and I love the grain of the wood. But, it made them a not so pleasing, gold color (which was the color they were when I started) . Has anyone stained these types of cabinet doors with a darker stain, without them looking yellowy/gold? Thanks for any help!

warning.. from these photos 1) you cannot be 100% sure you can take it down. From my ...»
experience from evaluation of them.. Id so no, you cannot. The common rule in in home construction is that the ceiling joists run the shortest distance, so it is very likely that this wall holds a load. What is contradictory to this is that there are no headers on each open side - so either a) headers are buried to carry the load, or your home is built with full width trusses. So .. if you want a definitive answer - post pictures of the outside and up in the attic :)

Remodeling: What to do with load-bearing posts

I'm rehabbing this home and want to remove the posts between the DR and LR; problem is, these support the upstairs wall and the roof is supported on it, so it will be $2200 to get rid of the two posts to the right and leaving the one to the left, moving it over to the right about a foot. I can save $1000 by just having two posts- I would remove the middle and move the two end ones closer together. Any thoughts on type of decorative (remember has to be load bearing) posts, or taking a 6x6 and decorating it to function well? Thanks ahead-

They actually used the existing posts, added different lengths of posts that were the same diameter, and made a contemporary open wood box floating shelving unit. It completely hid the fact that they were support posts, and acted more as a room divider. If you can set your DVR, or catch the episode, it may be worth a watch, and be a cheaper alternative, especially if you're rehabbing this home as an investment.

Remodeling: Crazy mess

Any advice would be appreciated. I helped with a construction project a few years ago along with my father and two brothers. My father has since passed away. The homeowner acted as ...»
the general contractor, signing all permits, calling for inspectio without oru knowledge, requiring her consent for any purchases, etc. We were barely into the job when she completely lost her mind and kicked everyone off the job. I was only helping part time and made approximately $3,000. She is now suing my father's estate, myself and my brothers, etc for $500,000 saying that the house is ruined. We were all paid as hourly employees. None of us signed any type of contract stating anything. Any suggestions as to what to do?
