and hail. Look for granules in gutter or splash guards, missing or lifted shingles, water stains on the roof decking in the attic. Recommend a professional to climb on the roof if you spot any of these issues. Make sure they are licensed and insured (call their agent listed on the policy to confirm)

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Does anyone have any experience with Leafree?

My roofer is also recommending Rapidflow inserts but I am not convinced of their value.

Thanks so much for your response, Paul. When you mention that you cleaned the gutter guards, ...»
what specifically did you do to clean them? We too will have to clean the roof because pine needles accumulate up there, but neither my husband nor I are up for the job so we would have to hire someone. We'd also have to get someone to do the cleaning you referenced so I want to get an idea of how much effort it took to clean them. Also, the product sold on Amazon is called LeafsOut rather than LeafBlaster. Did you get the product you installed on your house from Amazon or from another retailer?

Hey Hometalkers, here's a question for ya.

A lot of folks focus on gutter cleaning this time of year. Most want to do less of it and are considering gutter guards. Question is, are they worth the cost?

Whether you clean your gutters yourself, or invest in one of the many types of gutter guards, one thing is certain: cleaning your gutters is a good idea. Besides allowing water to overflow in a heavy rain, there are a dozen or more severe home defects that can be caused by blocked gutters, including flooded basements and ...»

cracked foundations (see list here: http://www.moneypit.com/article/gutter-clean...)

Do-it-yourself gutter cleaning is simple enough, but it can be a dangerous job for the untrained weekend warrior. In the alternative, there are many types of gutter guard systems on the market to choose from, and all of them offer some sort of protection for your gutter at different costs.

For starters, hardware stores and home centers sell simple plastic or metal screens that cost as little as $1 per foot. But premium gutter guards are also available. These can cost as much as $25 per foot, including labor and materials, and generally are only available through an authorized dealer.

So are gutter guards really worth it? Like most home improvement adventures, we think it comes down to cost and convenience. While premium gutters guards can be costly, most are effective and a bargain when you add in the cost of any emergency room visits necessitated when adding your own personal spin on the season known as Fall!

Do you have gutter guards on your house? If so, we'd love to hear what kind you have and whether they really work!

I think you clarified the issue. It is not only the cost to buy and install these things but the on going cost to make them do the job you paid for.

Keep Your Roof Free of Debris To Avoid Costlier/Extensive Repair Later

Often many aspects of home will go overlooked. One part we definitely cannot overlook is our roofs. Debris on a roof can cause premature failure. It prevents the roof from draining/drying out in a timely manner. Bugs such as ants may build nests in the debris and actually bore holes into your roof. Fixing minor roof problems like these can help you avoid costlier and more ...»

Take Care of Your Home This Season

Winter brings a unique set of challenges for home maintenance. Take care of your investment wisely ... here are just a few simple tips: ...»

Windows

Make sure your windows aren't costing you money this winter. Check for loose caulk or deteriorated weather-stripping, and then repair or replace it. Consider installing replacement windows, which are relatively inexpensive and will save you money on heating costs in the long run.

Chimney

Enjoy your fireplace with complete peace of mind by having the chimney checked and cleaned by a certified chimney sweep. It's vital that the chimney be examined for blockage that can cause dangerous carbon monoxide build-up. Leaves, sticks and sometimes even animals can plug up a chimney.

Roofs and Gutters

Roofs should be examined for any cracked, broken or missing shingles, and at the points where pipes, vents and chimneys come through your roof (where most leaks occur). Also check for blocked gutters, which can cause problems when water freezes inside and creates ice dams. When the ice and snow melts, it can get into your home and cause damage.

Lighting

The longer and darker days make exterior lighting more essential than at any other time of year. Check all your bulbs and add timers or photoelectric sensors. For spotlights, replace incandescent bulbs with halogens for improved clarity. Add or adjust motion detectors for safety and security.
