Update Old Stairs with Painted Pine Treads and New Risers

This is my latest project in my 1979 fixer-upper house. Just finished adding new painted pine stair treads to the existing rough lumber stairs that were under the old carpet. This is a ...»
fairly easy project and coming in around $250 for 25 stairs, really cost effective. I couldn't be happier with how they turned out. I'll add a runner down the middle later on.

Painting Stairs and Adding Runners

With my house renovation, we updated the stair treads with new pine treads painted dark chocolate brown, as well as white risers. My plans all along have been to add a runner and I just ...»
got that finished. These are Dash and Albert indoor/outdoor runners and should be very durable for stairs. I used carpet tape and 1/2" staples to keep them in place and love the outcome!

You can see the entire tutorial on my blog!

Painting: how to paint staircase wall without a scaffold

I can't afford to hire a professional and I'm afraid to rig up a scaffold...is there any way to cut-in the top of a staircase wall? I thought of duck-taping a stiff brush to a pole, but ...»
not sure if it would work. Guess I could paint the ceiling the same color if I have to, but prefer not. Any suggestions?

Turn your stairs into a work of art

When I I ripped off the old stairway carpet, I debated for two long years on what to do with the stairs. The 'old patina' showing up on the stairs from daily wear and tear fired up an ...»
idea... make them look as if they were made from old crates.

So I got to work creating stencils and painted them with craft paint. Adding creative things such as yardsticks for risers just added to the fun.

The stairs fool nearly everyone coming in thinking I spent a FORTUNE on them, when in reality, they were absolutely free.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Stair treads/risers separated, no access to underside

Does anyone have advice on how to pull several stair risers back into contact with the treads where they have separated? I just bought a 1920's house and a few of the risers appear to have been "kicked inward" for lack of a better descripton. There is NO access to the underside of the staircase. The area underneath is finished plaster and lathe. The stair treads feel solid, but the 1/2 inch gap is unsightly. This would likely be a DIY project so any descriptions would be gladly ...»
welcomed! (attached pic does not show gaps, just for reference of enclosed staircase)

I can't tell from your pic where the gap actually is. But your stairway looks like a clone of ...»
my sister/brother in law's house (also a 1920s center hall gem). When they removed the carpet from the stairs, they planned on refinishing the wood and leaving them bare wood (great move). Except there was about a half inch gap where the stair met the wall. I told them the only fix I could see would be to affix small pieces of quarter round moulding and just miter the edges where they meet and then paint the moulding against the wall and the new pieces all white to blend. It was really the only fix and it looked pretty good when finished. As I said, can't tell where your gap is, but would running some small moulding against the gap and nailed in work?

Update a Basement Staircase with paint!

staples and painted the treads with Sherwin Williams enamel paint with SharkGrip added to make it non-skid. The risers were painted different shades of blue/green/purple with all the leftover paint samples from our basement remodel. We had a carpenter cover the block wall with sheetrock and add the board and batten treatment.

Love the way this project brightened our basement!
