garage doors

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Opening a stuck door in an old house

The house I'm moving into has a "stuck" front door that hasn't been opened in over 60 yrs. The door "wiggles" so the problem seems to be in the old-fashioned door knob/locking mechanism. ...»
The door has a large glass window in it as well. Should I find someone to take the door off it's hinges without breaking the glass in the door? This part of the house was"updated" in 1901; I expect the door was either updated or replaced at that time. The original part of the house was built in 1826...Thank you for your comments as I am "stuck" on this! : )

Your best bet would probably be to replace the entire door unit...frame and all! Good luck!

Painting: Front Door Paint Problem

We have a steel front door that was painted when we bought the house. We've had the house for 10 years and nothing I do will make the door paint not bubble and peel off. Its looks like it ...»
is in a perpetual state of the measles. I've sanding the spots down, primed them, put kilz on them....it works for a while but then the bubbles return. The door gets the full afternoon Arizona sun. Outside of replacing the door (with maybe the same problem), what can I do?

Design & Décor: Help! Can you help redo this living room? Rock, brick, bookshelf, off center window are too challenging for me.

vaulted ceiling. The large window is off center. The left side of the room has a huge built in bookcase. The right side of the room has a curved brick wall which leads to the dining room. There is a 1/2 wall brick planter separating the living room from the dining room. I like the brick but am not so sure about the rock. My furniture is Queen Anne style so this is really a challenge for me. I would appreciate suggestions. Thank you

Windows & Doors: door hardware

How do you keep the brass toned finish from wearing off doorknobs? We just got replacements for our storm door and the last ones looked terrible. Probably doesnt help that we live along the gulf coast with the heat and humidity

Does any one know how to fix doorbell? Have a Nutone doorbell and it stopped working. Sometimes if pushed real hard you

can hear it, but not always. It was put in in 1980,and a lot of neighbors say the same thing about theirs. The one on my front gate works, but not at the house itself. Help?

Windows & Doors: Window choices

Ok folks! I have opted for white wooden cabinets versus the thermofoil after much consideration. Thank you to all of you for the feedback. My next decision is windows. We want some ...»
special transoms for our front and our builder got us some quotes on a different brand of window than the original Anderson Windows that are in the contract to make up for the cost. As of right now we have some options with costs so my question is does anyone have information or experience about Mathews Brothers windows versus Anderson. We do not want issues with windows down the line and would love to know what anyone knows about this brand. Again we live in New Hampshire so good insulated and sealed windows is extremely important. I look forward to any advice you can give me.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: What to do with this window?

This is my soon-to-be in-shower window. This was the bathtub area, and we desire a shower larger than a bathroom stall. Two major problems. (1) Privacy! Even with the trees, if someone is walking or driving up the hill just through them, you can see in. (2) Summer heat makes that bathroom feel like an oven. We do not have resources to totally replace it, and we don't want to mess with the outside part of it. Ideas we thought about was building a glass block casing that would slide into ...»
the existing casing and hope the "pocket" of air would help insulate during the summer. Not sure. Another idea that Mike had was to use foam insulation on the bottom 2 rows and we glass block the upper 2. I think the foam insulation would look tacky, especially come resale time many years down the road. Any advice or ideas to look into would be great. Other challenges: small budget, DIY preferred.

shower folks, for resale a tub in the master is always desirable! It turned out well for you! As for privacy and light, have you looked in what we used to call Burmuda Shutters? I don't know if they even make them any more...they are hinged on the outside from the top and are held open with short poles. The good thing about them is that they can be opened at different levels.

I would change out the blinds for a fabric roman shade (there are awesome DIY tips for how to ...»
turn a mini blind into a roman shade - google it) and maybe paint a decorative trim around the window in lieu of molding. Why not keep the artsy vibe going? I would also add some chunky metal hinges (even if they aren't actually functioning) to the insides of the 'shutters' for added interest & to make them really stand out as purposeful. Good luck & post photos of what you decide!

You can find a contractor on this site. On the top blue bar you will see Members & Pros. You ...»
can find people that you see often on this site in your area that can assist you. Be sure permits are pulled. As this is a structural renovation. A support header will be needed above the window. Also read the payment information on the permit. It will instruct you NOT to pay the final invoice until the install was approved by the local building department. This assures that the job was done properly according to the local codes. You should not pay much more then 30% down with final payment when done. This whole job is about two days to be ready for paint.
