Refinishing butcher block counter tops

I love my wood block counter tops but I've been trying to come up with a way to refinish them so I could still get the max use out of them. I cut on them, not heavy duty prep work, but ...»
sandwiches, apples etc.. and I'm not opposed to the "gently used" look. This house is 120 years old so some aging just can't be avoided. I have been debating upgrading to a solid surface but have yet to find one that I love enough to spend the money on knowing I'll have to live with it forever once I do. Instead I decided to try changing the color of the counter. Natural butcher block once oiled is yellow/orange and with my terra cotta floor tiles and egg nog painted cabintets, I wasn't in love. I bought a quart of Varithane oil based wood stain in "bleached." I love driftwood and thought this would be a great way to neutralize all the orange in the room. After hand sanding the counters I applied and wiped off two coats leaving to dry for two days. I finished the counters with a coat of hand rubbed furniture wax. The finish is silky smooth and the water just beads up and off. I won't be cutting directly on the anymore as I'm not confident about how food safe this wax is, but that's fine. The end result is great. The kitchen looks lighter, brighter and bigger!

I too am crazy about butcher block! But I am very careful to use cutting boards. We sealed our ...»
island top (the only place I have butcher block) and I am careful to keep it wiped. I also wipe it down with Clorox kitchen cleaner and it stays perfect! I wish I had BB through my entire counter tops!

Farmhouse renovation complete!

I loved this house as soon as I saw it. Abutting a plant nursery, a converted barn- now a house- and tennis courts across the street. ...»

The location was great but to quote my painter friend, "this house is sad."

Years of burning wood fires had left every surface dingy, dark and oily with soot. I wanted to make it warm, airy and cozy using creams, yellows, grays, whites with a few bright accents.

Freshly sanded floors, all new light fixtures, fresh paint, hardware, appliances... and some more important behind the scenes updates turned this house into a home.

Let me know what you think!

The kitchen floor was a pre-finished white oak and was that light yellow color. It looked very ...»
prefab next to the fir floors everywhere else so I opted to stain it a dark gray. My house has quarter sawn white oak stained driftwood gray and they hide dust and scratches beautifully. This gray is a combo of black and white stain, 4 coats, and I believe as it wears out should look really nice.

Cleaning Silver

My New Year's clean sweep as usual turned into a week long project where I get in the weeds trying to organize the house for a fresh start. Cleaning up after the holiday parties turned ...»
into a complete reorg of every serving piece in the house. I decided to give a try to an idea I'd seen on Pinterest for cleaning silver. I collect yard sale silver plated serving pieces so I was looking for a quick way to shine them up. I lined the sink with foil, added some generous scoops of salt and baking soda and filled the sink with scalding hot water. The chemical reaction resulting from the aluminum, salt and soda removed the tarnish! It actually worked! Lesson learned. Dip the entire piece at once or you'll get a line of demarcation on your piece. I also kept adding hot water and more ingredients because the hotter the water, the quicker it works. Remove the pieces from the solution and buff the remaining spots off with a cotton cloth.

Christmas Pumpkins

I have trouble throwing away a live plant just because it is out of season and the same hold true for me and pumpkins. Like the poinsettia, the pumpkin causes me some anxiety at the end ...»
of the season. It's food, yet not one that I like to eat, and it's still fresh ,so I can't justify throwing it out. So to ease my guilty conscience this is what I came up with this year.. Christmas Caroling Pumpkins. My husband thinks I'm insane, but I kind of like them. They just need some sheet music.
