We never used our formal dining room so I decided to turn it into a library. The bookcase was an easy DIY project and the gallery wall was very inexpensive to create. ...»

What a beautiful way to personalize your space! We have some family friends (a couple in ...»
their 90's), who have owned the same house for over 30 years. They did something similar to this, but left a big blank spot on the wall. Everyone who visits gets to sign their wall and leave a message. They have repainted over the years, but framed out and left the signature wall untouched. They have a great record and memories of visitors, but I have to admit, it was strange to be asked to write on a wall after being taught as a child that you just don't do that!

Painting: Should I paint my kitchen cabinets?

These cabinets are about 30 years old but still look good I think. I have been throwing around the idea of painting them a off white colour. It is a hugh kitchen and would be a hugh ...»
job. Or, I could just paint the walls... it is a peanut shell colour now. What colour do you think? Also, I was thinking maybe just change the hardware. Should I have a runner or area run under the table. Any other ideas to spruce up this space would be welcome. HELP PLEASE!!

One thing to consider before you paint the cabinets is whether they are solid wood or a ...»
laminate. You would need to clean with TSP to remove any signs of grease and lightly sand the cabinets to remove any gloss for the paint to stick properly. Solid wood cabinets are easier to paint because the surface isn't as "slick" as a laminate and you don't have to worry about sanding that may penetrate the thickness of the laminate. Whatever the material, do your homework on prep before painting because it is a LOT of work and you wouldn't want the paint chipping. There are also special paints made that are more durable, so check with your local paint store pro for advice. If you decide to paint, we want to see pictures! I also like the idea of painting the island a different color.

  • The first color try. I didn't like it so I took it back in and they fixed it for free. 1
  • The sign. I cut out letters and taped them on. Then I lightly sprayed with black paint. It took several coats.
  • After the right number of coats of paint I removed the paper letters.
  • The final sign after the white touch up. 1
  • Hanging the sign. We secured it right into the brick. The trim on the metal door was screwed right in too.

Father's Day gift for my geeky husband.

I converted our outside, basement door into the Tardis. (The time machine from Doctor Who) It's the perfect entrance for his "man cave". I had some help with the power tools and details.

Painting: Is there a secret to painting without bleeding when using tape?

Everything out West is textured walls...the ugly knock down drywall texture that is impossible ...»
to get sharp lines when painting. Pre-sealing the edges of the tape gives a clean, straight edge, even with the texture. Custom Interiors, I'm so jealous....the cut-in skill is something I dream to master because I HATE taping!

  • It is possible to have a non-white kitchen feel fresh and light! 5
  • Simple window treatments allow windows to bring in as much light as possible while still adding warmth. 2
  • Glass front cabinets add depth and reflect light.

When You Don't Have a White Kitchen!

What do you do when you don't have a white kitchen? They are all the rage right now but for those of us who find ourselves with dark cabinets it can feel a little bit like we aren't part ...»
of the "in" crowd. I hope you will read the rest of this over at our blog to find out how you can still create a space that is light, bright and full of charm without breaking open that can of white paint!

We didn't go white in ours, either. We originally wanted dark wood, but happened upon an ...»
entire vignette from a "Great Indoors" store that was going out of business, who had a maple kitchen. We rearrangd it to fit, had 3 custom cabinets made to make it work, and put in a dark ceramic tile flooring, and a gray granite, with a green glass backsplash, and stainless on the Island. With lots of new lighting, it's bright and fresh looking, too. We tried to choose things that weren't too "trendy" since this will have to last us a while. It's all personal taste.
