laminate. You would need to clean with TSP to remove any signs of grease and lightly sand the cabinets to remove any gloss for the paint to stick properly. Solid wood cabinets are easier to paint because the surface isn't as "slick" as a laminate and you don't have to worry about sanding that may penetrate the thickness of the laminate. Whatever the material, do your homework on prep before painting because it is a LOT of work and you wouldn't want the paint chipping. There are also special paints made that are more durable, so check with your local paint store pro for advice. If you decide to paint, we want to see pictures! I also like the idea of painting the island a different color.

to get sharp lines when painting. Pre-sealing the edges of the tape gives a clean, straight edge, even with the texture. Custom Interiors, I'm so jealous....the cut-in skill is something I dream to master because I HATE taping!

entire vignette from a "Great Indoors" store that was going out of business, who had a maple kitchen. We rearrangd it to fit, had 3 custom cabinets made to make it work, and put in a dark ceramic tile flooring, and a gray granite, with a green glass backsplash, and stainless on the Island. With lots of new lighting, it's bright and fresh looking, too. We tried to choose things that weren't too "trendy" since this will have to last us a while. It's all personal taste.

square, so a dry fit to determine the visual is so important because if you start in the wrong place, you could end up with a tile at your entry or against the tub that is not straight if the wall where you started isn't straight, and it would be an eyesore and make your work look amateur-ish. They don't tell you this stuff on the box of tile!
