Gardening: I live in Colorado where it is dry and windy.

My back yard is huge and to conserve water I dug out the sod and spread wood mulch a few years ago. The mulch has blown away/disintegrated and the weeds have taken over. I don't want to ...»
use black plastic or fabric because they don't work. I'm thinking of using newspaper covered in straw. But how can I keep the straw from blowing away? I thought about straw net but it's more expensive than I expected so I'm thinking of spreading loose straw. My ultimate plan is to lay flagstone, but I need to control the weeds in the meantime.

Gardening: I have very hard dirt in my flower gardens.

I love it when people have very lush black dirt. How do I get that without it washing/blowing away?

Soil conditioner is a HUGE help for quick success. Buy it at Home Depot for $3.50, or ...»
elsewhere for $6. Also compost. Throw out about a third or more of the yucky hard clay in the planting hole. Try composting. Ask your neighbore for thier bagged leaves or get the free compost at your local county dump.

Gardening: I have several thuga green giants growing about my property and all are doing very well except for one.

The one in question was planted 3 years ago and up to now been growing like a weed. Noticed the inner branches starting to turn yellow, started at the top and continuing to spread down the tree. Does anyone have an idea what's wrong.
