Home Maintenance & Repairs: Does a whole house fan installed in the attic with the vent in the ceiling reduce A/C costs?

In the evening when it's below 70 degrees outside & I open the windows, I can't get the cooler air to circulate into my house and am forced to continue to run the A/C.

My aunt had one installed in her house in Central Texas, She had a 2 story home and when she ...»
opened the windows on the first level and ran the big fan it would pull cooler air in from outside..the thing sounded like a helicopter though...at least to me.

Some people with plant trees and bushes to "funnel" cool evening winds to the house, opening windows that are on opposite sides can sometimes allow for a natural "cross flow" to occur.

Where I live it never gets that hot...and we get by with a simple ceiling fan on the few months we hit above 70
