Penny Countertop

Took our dated laminate counter and covered it in pennies and epoxy. Messed up a ton along the way, so if you'd like to do something similar check out my tutorial at ...»

Penny floors

Saw this kitchen floor made by mosaic artist Amanda Edwards using pennies. Seems like a great idea. I was actually thinking of using this idea for a backsplash, but still a lot to consider.

  • The Beginning. Clean the concrete floor very well. Then paint the floor with 2 coats of Kilz water based sealer. Let it dry overnite. Next day streak entire floor with acrylic paint wood colors in one direction. I used bamboo tones. 1
  • Finished Floor. When paint streaks are dry, create the lines with a black permanent Sharpie pen that represent the boards. I did 6"x3' boards. stagger the boards approx 12" like wood floors. Darken a few boards for natural variation. 13
  • My Studio. When boards are to your liking and paint is dry, apply at least 4 coats of polyurethane over the entire floor. Let dry 3 days before putting furniture on it and 2 weeks before dragging across floor. Voila! You did it.

painting concrete floors

I had to pull the carpet up in one of my bedrooms and I didnt know what to put down on the bare concrete floor, so it stayed concrete for a while. I eventually decided to use the room as ...»
an art studio and wanted to have a wood floor in there. I decided to put my trompe l'oiel knowledge to work and paint the concrete floor in a bamboo style similar to my bamboo floor in my living room and I love the way it turned out. People have to look twice or be told its painted. a true trompe l'oiel effect.

Our Under $100 Closet System IKEA Hack

We bought our house as a foreclosure and as such the previous owners had removed EVERYTHING! Bathroom mirrors, closets rods and shelves, all the things you take for granted. You don't ...»
realize how costly replacing all of that can be until you have to do it.

We managed a custom closet system for two closets under $100 each using the IKEA Billy bookcase and a few slight modifications resulting in a custom look that could've costed us hundreds of dollars more. Add a few shelves and bars in between two Billy bookcases and you've got yourself an easy DIY custom closet on the cheap!

  • OH NO! A deadly mishap this morning! Time for a new colored gazing ball.
  • This is a top view of the hole we drilled in the log to run the extension cord. The end of the hole is the same diameter as the outside of the gazing ball stem.
  • Feeding the strand of colored lights into the gazing ball.
  • I taped the end of the strand of lights to the extension cord so it couldn't accidently pull out and fall back down that long 31 inch hole in the log.
  • Placing the gazing ball onto the top of the log.
  • This is how the gazing ball nestles onto the log. It just sits there.
  • All finished. Now my Fairyball is green until I can find the perfect replacement color. 1

Lighted gazing ball mounted in an old log / Instructions included!

This is a standard glass gazing ball that can be purchased at many home centers that we mounted on an old log and installed colored lights inside the glass ball. We drilled a hole up ...»
through the center of the log and fished an extension cord from the bottom to the top and into the glass ball after inserting colored LED lights. Then we mounted the log on a concrete base and secured it in place. I broke my original beloved gazing ball this morning trying to get pics so that is the reason for the change on the color of the glass ball.
