Food

I'm interested in your thoughts as far as how long food in cans will stay safe to eat? Do you pay attention to "expiration, use by, best by" dates? When I was younger I don't recall ...»
paying any attention unless a can was bulging or leaking. That was obviously not used and tossed. I've had people say that those dates are a marketing ploy to have you buy more.

There is a market about 30-40 miles form me that a few of my clients told me about. They call ...»
it the "discount market". A good portion of the food there is old stock that they get from other markets. Most of it is about 1/2 price or more off the regular price I see in my local market. The reason is the bulk of these food containers are past the "sell by" date. for some items it may only be a few weeks others a few months. But depending on the item these things still have a lot of potential.

I picked up a bag of "pirate booty" for about 75 cents...this normally runs about 2.50 to 3 bucks a bag. It is puffy rice with cheese or other flavors mixed in. My girls ate it with no complaints.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Have a question for those of you who have fireplaces, wood burning stoves and fireplace inserts.

Should fire starters like those made from wax and pine cones be used? The only information I can find is to NOT use them in stoves and inserts because of the build up from the wax. ...»
Nothing said as far as fireplaces. Reason I'm asking is because I've made some using melted candles poured into cardboard egg cartons and would like to give them to friends.

I have an insert and a free standing wood stove. With these two we burn about 5 to 6 cords ...»
each season. We use a fire starter from Rutland

    http://www.amazon.com/Rutland-Safe-Starter-S...

these have a touch of wax in them, but not nearly as much as some home made versions. What is far more important than the starter is the bulk of the wood that is burned and "how" the stove is operated. It is best to burn "hot" as this reduces the potential for creosote build up. Check out this article I wrote

    http://www.networx.com/article/how-to-build-...

My concern with a wax starter is they tend to pool a bit of melted wax below them when they are used. If this is dripping on to old ash chances or higher that is will later be combusted as the stove comes up to operational temps. If the stove is empty then this wax may melt and drip on to the metal liner, which then may be covered is ash later. This will most likely cause some cleaning issues in the firebox itself.

Re-purposing old family mailbox

I saw this on Pinterest and Honey helped me! I bet sometimes he thinks Pinterest is awesome and the other times he thinks it might just be the devil! I now use it to store my garden tools ...»
and gloves. Certainly has increased his creative work load around the house! The mailbox belonged to my son's great-great grandparents and his namesake AP Young. It is priceless to us!

Evidently this is gonna be a good year for spiders. Use caution when reaching into anything ...»
because you don't know who's been there first. I have a bite on my back. Have no idea what because I haven't been crawling into any dark spaces. A friend of mine had a bite on the inside of her forearm - much nastier looking than mine. She was weeding and thought all she had to worry about was avoiding the poison ivy. I had the doctor check it out - all this talk about recluse type made me justifiably paranoid. Someone in the next room must have gotten into poinson ivy. I think he may have written the same 3 prescriptions for all of us on Saturday.

  • "Polatems" (Pots, plates, totems) My husband always says "What will she think of next"! 30

"Polatems" (pots, plates, totems) birdbaths, bird feeders and planters.

I had so much fun putting my "Polatems" together. I collected beautiful pots and plates from Goodwill and garage sales. I dug a hole 12" deep intserted a piece of rebar, which can be purchased at a hardware store in any length of your choice. Fill the hole with concrete. Level the rebar to make it straight. Once the concrete dries..overnight is good, start putting the pots and plates onto the rebar in an artistic order, gluing them as you go..I used glass glue from the hardware ...»
store, it comes in a caulking tube. Use a level to keep each pot or plate straight. You can add pieces in the middle such as a metal dish from an old firepit as a planter or even a terricotta planter. Just be creative. Top it off with a glass ball, a ceramic bird or whatever suits you fancy. There you have it ...Enjoy and watch the birds..even the Hummers like the colors.

What type of bit would you use to drill the holes so it wouldn't shatter?
