About Me:

We own a small 2/1 on a half acre, circa 1910 near New Braunfels, TX. It needs a lot of work!

Favorite area of home improvement:

I am not very skillful but willing to try. My husband is a tool guy, mostly metals and a skillful welder, has lots of various tools and is very picky. He loves his extra large garage/man cave as he is currently restoring a '72 Nova. He agrees that we urgently need home improvements now that spring is here and summer is soon approaching. I'd like to throw a few outdoor parties but the work load of improvements is overwhelming right now -- and expensive! The front of our house is a brilliant blue, painted by the previous residents who did not complete the sides and back of the house! It's stucco. I think I am going to paint the other walls a different color, or all different because the main road traffic in front sees our house readily. I prefer something super artistic than the staid, cookie cutter pricey urban sprawl all around us. I also want to add an easy to install DIY huge terrace in the front yard which is way too big!

Painting: Shutters: What color?

I am posting a picture of my home's exterior. I thought I could kind of match the shutter color to the grayest brick. Imagine my horror when the color just blended and looks like no ...»

hello Melissa, I've been reading many of the posts. It's great to get so many opinions and so ...»
much advice from people who you do not know, really, but all of us love a lovely looking home. To answer your question, yes, I was referring to the box woods. Dig them up and transplant them to the area in the picture, which I realize now will provide a very nice look along with privacy since this is your front yard. I love the blog about planting perennials around your fountain. I also appreciate you and your hubby doing the recycling from the business location, laying down the new path. Most of us do not have the budget to afford hiring gardeners and buying pricey materials. Besides, knowing that you DIY has so much more meaning! When you and hubby are too old to do this type of work, sitting in your rockers looking out over your yard, you can recall, 'Remember when we did the back breaking, time consuming work of hauling the path stones?' YOU GO MELISSA!

Furniture: how do I build sturdy small narrow book shelves that will also hold cds?

Great idea! Never thought of that, except that at the time I wanted to fill up the books with ...»
real cd's...I stored their cases knowing that some day they would be of use..your idea would have been far more fun, to save the cd case across from its cd. Nowadays I am at home mostly so I do not carry cd's around with me, plus those little ipods are handy too! One more thought regarding those simple book cases, I'd like to have them enclosed, or at least the front of them. My house is circa 1910 with 24 windows in a rural area, no nearby neighbors or buildings to block the views of rural life or its breezes coming through the windows. I do not like ac, prefer natural air. I may be forced to turn on the ac this July or August due to our very dry climate and sizzling temperatures. However, I do not like to dust the house daily! I realized that open bookshelves and cd shelves is a collector of dust.

'Home made' as this may sound, the backside of the shelves will be against a wall. I thought if I cannot have simple hinged doors, maybe a simple calico cotton curtain would work, mounted on an inexpensive simple rod across the top. Mind you, my home is NOT a museum but rather a very down home, front porch, back porch, where friends and family gather freely for Texas bar b que and a cold beer. Simplicity and a truly rural look is key. Thanks so much, KMS Woodworks, for your communications!
