and a commanding presence. The answer was an old recycled mantel! We found it on CraigsList for $50, filled in the middle with plywood, covered the plywood with a draped twin sheet, added some wooden block "feet", and gave it some TLC and a fresh coat of paint.     word rather 'twee' though and I would say nowadays, old fashioned. (Seems to me they've been around for ever).
