  • 48 sod pieces done!
  • After putting down the first 24 sod pieces, my almost 3-year-old checks it out. She told me that I was doing a good job. Such a sweet superviser!

Backyard Playground

We jumped this project after finding this playset on super sale. At this point I decided to put down sod before the weekend of thunderstorms come. We hope the rain will give us a good ...»
start rooting the sod. The front part was ready for sod, but we are waiting to sod the back and underneath parts. Underneath we want to replace the wood blocks (placed by the playset installers) leveling the playset with concrete pavers. In the back we are grading down so the down hill slope continues to be more subtle yet enough for decent drainage. Then I will grade down an L piece where the slide comes out for additional play area and roomier slide landing. As for the empty part in the front with the sod? I'm thinking plastic kiddie swimming pool for this incoming hot summer. This area has me excited about other backyard improvements!

Cleaning & Organization: Asthma friendly cleaning solutions

My youngest daughter is asthmatic, and we're quickly learning her triggers. One of her major triggers is cleaning products, especially strong ones and Bleach. We are discovering other ...»
cleaning solutions that won't trigger her asthma and doesn't contain vinegar (hubby cannot stand vinegar smell and we both do the cleaning). Thankfully I have found a floor cleaning and multipurpose solution. However, I'm looking for a furniture cleaning solution. Ideas?

Something I have found recently that works wonders in the shower on soap and hard water ...»
deposits is 1 cup white vinegar heated in the microwave and than add another cup of blue dawn. Mix it and leave it for at least two hours and than rinse. It works wonders and it does not smell to much like vinegar.

Cleaning & Organization: Air Purification for Asthmatic Toddler

Checking consumer report ratings and recommendations for air purifiers. For those of you who use them, what do you recommend for home and/or room air purifiers for an asthmatic child?

Home Maintenance & Repairs: Building New Tiled Shower

I need professional advice on this topic. We will soon be framing an area for a tiled shower. Do we need to use sheetrock and backerboard, or can we use just backerboard? Every other ...»
how-to article gives different steps. This will be a 2-person tiled shower. Thanks!

Thank you, everyone, for clearing the confusion and recommending your preferred product. We ...»
are hoping to begin moving the closet wall for the bigger shower this month. Lord willing, the shower will be done in time for my birthday in February! Of course there will be pictures as the bathroom progresses. You guys are wonderful, and I hope the favor is soon returned! Many blessings!

  • The old window.

Home Maintenance & Repairs: What to do with this window?

This is my soon-to-be in-shower window. This was the bathtub area, and we desire a shower larger than a bathroom stall. Two major problems. (1) Privacy! Even with the trees, if someone is walking or driving up the hill just through them, you can see in. (2) Summer heat makes that bathroom feel like an oven. We do not have resources to totally replace it, and we don't want to mess with the outside part of it. Ideas we thought about was building a glass block casing that would slide into ...»
the existing casing and hope the "pocket" of air would help insulate during the summer. Not sure. Another idea that Mike had was to use foam insulation on the bottom 2 rows and we glass block the upper 2. I think the foam insulation would look tacky, especially come resale time many years down the road. Any advice or ideas to look into would be great. Other challenges: small budget, DIY preferred.

The full bath with a shower and tub IS the best idea. Even if the current owners are all ...»
shower folks, for resale a tub in the master is always desirable! It turned out well for you! As for privacy and light, have you looked in what we used to call Burmuda Shutters? I don't know if they even make them any more...they are hinged on the outside from the top and are held open with short poles. The good thing about them is that they can be opened at different levels.

Gardening: Uprooting Poison Ivy

I have poison ivy growing along the side of my house. Every year I spray it, and it comes back 2-3 seasons. The vine where I previously sprayed is dead. Is there a way to get rid of it ...»
for good, like digging up a root, without getting it all over me?

It's definitely not a one-time process. If you can spray, wait a few days for the the ...»
herbicide to act, then cut the vine and paint the cut with full-strength herbicide, that may help. But be very careful when doing so. Good luck, Amanda.

  • Using what grows on the family farm to decorate for fall!

Fall Wreath

This is a simple wreath made from premade grapevine wreath (Wal-Mart), cotton taken from my parent's field (with permission of course!), some ribbon, and hot glue I removed the cotton so I would have the long stems. The stems are woven into the grapevine wreath, and this is all secured with hot glue.

  • My first thought was to pour a concrete slab, but the 12" concrete pavers were much more economical. This is the 1st row done.
  • My youngest's way of saying, "Momma, it's time to take a break and play with me!"
  • Third row done. Learning how to "pave" this small scale project is preparing me for a larger paver project in the back yard.

Trash Can Patio

Finally decided where to permanently place my outdoor trash and recycle cans. Now to build the Trash Can Patio! The future finished look will include a trellis where the pallet is, a ...»
butterfly bush in front of everything, new landscaping timber for edging, and a butterfly bush in front of everything to soften the corner of the house. Will post again when finished!

Sorry I haven't updated photos! Since the "dry run," I have made improvements. There is now a ...»
simple ramp that eases the off and on movement of the cans. Also, I installed a paver block edging material, cannot think of the proper name right now, and that keeps the blocks from shifting left or right. We opted to put ours outside the garage so the smell of the trash does not lurk into our home. The front door entrance is not far from the trash can patio. Soon I will be installing a short fence to better conceal the sight of the trash cans from the street. I can say that moving the cans off the platform can be cumbersome if the cans are heavy. If I had planned better I would have allowed room for a walking path behind the trash cans to ease that problem. Hope this information helps!

  • Awkward patch of grass... what to do?

That awkward patch of grass

I'm hunting for ideas and suggestions for this patch of grass between my driveway and porch. It gets mostly shade, tends to hold onto water (drainage?), and we usually walk where the stepping block is placed. I thought about a butterfly bush, but I am also concerned with it drawing bees since my son is allergic to the stings. Open to creativity and DIY!

Upcycled Jack-O-Latern

To simplify my fall decore, I'm tossing month specific items like turkeys and jack-o-laterns. Of course I give second changes. This is a jack-o-latern lamp from Wal-Mart. I removed the light hardware. This removed the cord issue. Then I printed a nice letter stencil and transferred it with a Sharpie to the back of the pumpkin. Most monogrammed pumpkins at the stores run about $30. This one was free!
